drinking well and early downtown--any ideas?

A friend and I will be hanging out downtown during the day this week, and we need to get our drink on earlier than usual. Drink early and often is the theme we've adopted. She really wants to try out a lot of the cool new LA cocktail bars that I've been bragging about, so we definitely have our sights on Varnish and 7 Grand. Alas, the earliest we can get in either of these is 5:00pm. Are there any of the better bars downtown that are open any earlier than that? It doesn't have to be strictly a bar. A restaurant with an excellent bartender/cocktail selection will do, but I'd love to show off the Downtown LA scene a little bit. Any ideas? We'll be there on a Tuesday.

  1. Pete's is not a bar per se, but open. There's Redwood House across from the LA Times.

      1. I've always enjoyed Corkbar and I believe they are open from 11:30 a.m. onwards with Happy Hour starting at 4 p.m.

The Must is also open from 4 p.m. onwards:

Chaya Downtown and Drago Centro are both open from 5:00 p.m.

        Drago Centro
525 S. Flower St., Suite 120, Los Angeles, CA 90071

        Must Wine Bar
        118 W 5th St, Los Angeles, CA 90013

        403 W 12th St, Los Angeles, CA

        Chaya Downtown
525 S. Flower Street, Los Angeles, CA 90071

FYI, Chaya Downtown is open for lunch Mon-Fri 11AM-2:30PM; kitchen is closed from 2:30 pm - 5:30PM (bar food maybe a little earlier than 5:30P?) but the BAR is open 11am - 11:30 pm (M-F). See *Contact & Find Us* for full listing of Lunch, Happy Hour, Dinner, Bar Service, etc. at:

I love Corkbar! Their Happy Hour is excellent. If I recall, however, they don't have cocktails - only wine and maybe beer?

          2. i'd check out -- great beers, cool scene, open all day. ok sausages. some say overpriced -- but it's fun.

royal claytons - -- this is across the street from church & state and near wurstkuche. it's ok. unlike wurstkuche, it has hard liquor if that's what you're going for.

and then work your way into downtown proper -
cole's has amazing potato salad and great old school drinks. and it's open all day. this place is a must.

fyi - redwood bar changed their weekday hours. they used to be open all day, and now open at 5.

there are places in little tokyo + hotels in the are with bars. if you do a walking tour - you'll probably stumble upon some more random spots as well.

            have fun.

            1. You must visit The Edison. This is a bar/club that if very hip. It is located at 108 W. 2nd St. (2nd and Main). Enter through the alley. It is in the basement. This was LA's first private utility. The decor is amazing (vintage). Open Wed-Sat. They do serve appetizers and have an oyster bar that is open.
