drinking well and early downtown--any ideas?

A friend and I will be hanging out downtown during the day this week, and we need to get our drink on earlier than usual. Drink early and often is the theme we've adopted. She really wants to try out a lot of the cool new LA cocktail bars that I've been bragging about, so we definitely have our sights on Varnish and 7 Grand. Alas, the earliest we can get in either of these is 5:00pm. Are there any of the better bars downtown that are open any earlier than that? It doesn't have to be strictly a bar. A restaurant with an excellent bartender/cocktail selection will do, but I'd love to show off the Downtown LA scene a little bit. Any ideas? We'll be there on a Tuesday.

  1. Pete's is not a bar per se, but open. There's Redwood House across from the LA Times.

      1. I've always enjoyed Corkbar and I believe they are open from 11:30 a.m. onwards with Happy Hour starting at 4 p.m.

The Must is also open from 4 p.m. onwards:

Chaya Downtown and Drago Centro are both open from 5:00 p.m.

I love Corkbar! Their Happy Hour is excellent. If I recall, however, they don't have cocktails - only wine and maybe beer?

          2. i'd check out www.wurstkucherestaurant.com -- great beers, cool scene, open all day. ok sausages. some say overpriced -- but it's fun.

royal claytons - www.royalclaytonsenglishpub.com -- this is across the street from church & state and near wurstkuche. it's ok. unlike wurstkuche, it has hard liquor if that's what you're going for.

and then work your way into downtown proper - http://colesfrenchdip.com/.
cole's has amazing potato salad and great old school drinks. and it's open all day. this place is a must.

fyi - redwood bar changed their weekday hours. they used to be open all day, and now open at 5.

there are places in little tokyo + hotels in the are with bars. if you do a walking tour - you'll probably stumble upon some more random spots as well.

            have fun.

            1. You must visit The Edison. This is a bar/club that if very hip. It is located at 108 W. 2nd St. (2nd and Main). Enter through the alley. It is in the basement. This was LA's first private utility. The decor is amazing (vintage). Open Wed-Sat. They do serve appetizers and have an oyster bar that is open. http://www.edisondowntown.com

              1. You'd want to check on the hours just to make sure, but I'm pretty sure that Bottega Louie and/or Rivera would meet your needs - both serve excellent cocktails in their bar areas (if you go to Rivera, I highly recommend the Barbacoa). Wurstkuche is great, but I don't think they do cocktails - just beer. And later in the night you should go to Golden Gopher and the Edison!

agreed - and i think both rivera and bottega louie are open all day

edison & golden gopher open at 5ish

                2. Rivera. Tequila on tap. All Latin wine cellar. Cocktails so wild and inventive it'll blow your mind. John Sedlar's nouvelle Latin place. Stay for dinner.

                  1. The rooftop bar at the standard downtown is open during the day. (At Noon I think?)
