New, and some old in Ashland--value eating downtown.
We've had a couple of new places open up in Ashland recently, and for those visitors to our little village, I thought I'd give a bit of a review.
The newest restaurant is Blue, Greek on Granite. Just up from the main drag, with plenty of parking and outdoor seating, Blue is a tasteful place that has good food, a short but decent wine list, and a good vib. The service was quite friendly and didn't make any errors, a welcome change from the Italian place before it. Classic greek dishes at a reasonable price, then loftier prices for steak, salmon, etc. It is still quite crowded so reservations would be recommended.
Martolli's Hand Tossed Pizza is just off the plaza, very close to the Shakespeare theaters and represents a great place for visiting school kids to catch a bite to eat before the show. The pizza vies for the best in Ashland, along with Great American. Classic meat and veggie combos plus build your own options. Pizza by the slice is also available. They have salads, but I haven't tried them yet. I like the take-and-bake option they have. It's prebaked a bit so doesn't take too long to finish at home, plus the crust seems better than having all the baking at lower temp at home.
Greenleaf doesn't get written about much on this board but represents one of the few restaurants that has been around for a long time under the same management. On the plaza, they do a nice job with soup, sandwiches and salads. Very friendly staff. The must be doing something right as I think they've been here for over 15 years. I'm giving them a shout-out simply because it is so overlooked. Greenleaf has outdoor seating on Ashland Creek.
Sesame, just off the plaza toward Lithia Park--in fact next to Lithia Park. It has taken them a year, but they've settled into the space and their menu and are now producing some good asian inspired dishes. The best of our asian scene, which isn't saying much, but the place does represent a good value. I like their salads but others have had the noodle and rice dishes which tasted good. They have outdoor seating.
