Jackson, TN and more

Hello!

We will be driving from Austin to Lexington this weekend, spending Saturday night in Jackson. I'm looking for good ideas for dinner Saturday in Jackson or any other road recs through Kentucky and Tennessee. We are mostly interested in regional places but all suggestions are appreciated. We are probably going to skip Memphis and Nashville this time around and focus on more rural areas.

Thanks in advance.

  1. Just a head's up. You will be going through Texarkana. There's a nice old country store at Hooks, TX at Exit 208 with great BBQ/Steaks in case you want to make a rest stop. Gas station is next door. It's a minute off I 30. If you just go in for a rest stop then stop by. Neat place.

    Ramage Farms Country Store @ 901 Main St., Hooks, TX 903 - 547 - 6187. I30EXIT208. BBQ.

Jackson does not have a lot of fine dining. There are 4 Exits going through town in I 40. At the 2nd one 80AB there is an Old Country Store open from 6:30AM to 9:00PM which is really nice for everyone. Food is good and the atmosphere is super. It's to the right just as you get off I 40. There are several hotels there including a Holiday Inn but the Hampton Inn at Exit 83 is the best.

    Old Country Store @ 56 Casey Jones Lane, Jackson, TN 731 - 668 - 1223. * I40/EXIT80A/B. ***

Only other place you might like is Longhorn but it's a chain but pretty nice for drinks/dining. Baker's Rack is pretty good mom and pop diner.

    Longhorn Steakhouse @ 631 Vann Dr., Jackson, TN 731 - 512 - 0662. I40. ***
    Baker's Rack @ 205 East Lafayette St., Jackson, TN 731 - 424 - 6163. ***

Good rest stop just north of Nashville right off I 65 at Exit 97.

    Chef Market and Cafe and Take Away @ 900 Conference Dr., Goodlettsville, TN 615 - 851 - 2433. L/D. I65/EXIT97.

Two worthy spots in Bowling Green KY and Glendale KY.

    Smokey Pig BBQ @ 2520 Louisville Rd., Bowling Green, KY. 270 - 781 - 1712. I65/EXIT28. ***

    The Whistle Stop Restaurant @ 216 East Main St., Glendale, KY 270 - 369 - 7969. I65/EXIT86. LD. COUNTRY.

An interesting visit if you have time is Mammoth Cave. There's a nice hotel and dining room there that's reasonable, clean and has good food if you want to stop at Exit 48 north of Bowling Green. Largest caves in the US I think.

Mark's Feed Store in Elizabethtown KY gets good reviews.

    Mark's Feed Store @ 1704 Dixie Hwy. S., Elizabethtown, KY. 502 - 933 - 7707.

    Good places in Shelbyville, KY.

    Claudia Sanders Dinner House @ 3202 Shelbyville Rd., Shelbyville, KY 502 - 633 - 5600. * I64/EXIT32/32A. Lunch and Dinner.

    Ken Tex BBQ @ 1163 Mt. Eden Rd., Shelbyville, KY. 502 - 633 - 2463. * ***

    Have a safe trip.

I second the Whistle Stop if you make this trip again! (Glendale, KY). There's also a lot of hole-in-the-wall Korean and German restaurants in the Radcliff/Fort Knox area (I like Autumn Gardens, but the decor's AWFUL. Caroline's Alpine Haus has good German food, karaoke, etc, from what I've heard). I lived in Jackson, but the only places I remember are chains, Reggie's BBQ, and Old Country Store in the Casey Jones Village.
