Xi'an Famous Foods adding second Manhattan outlet?

soupçon May 28, 2010 05:09 AM

Don't know if this is news, as I live in SF and don't follow this board as religiously as I once did. I ran into Lao Liang of Xi'an Famous Foods while I was leaving the Golden Mall in Flushing late last night, and he told me he was busy preparing for the opening of a fourth branch, in the East Village. I believe he said it was at the "Sun Market" location, but after searching my mind and the Internet I'm not clear on what location he was talking about.

Any other reports on this?

i caught up with Lao Liang again and he confirmed the location of the upcoming new Xi'an Famous Foods outlet to be 81 St. Marks Place, the site of the former Seoul Station. I didn't grill him on how he got "Sun" out of "Seoul." Maybe it's Xi'an dialect ;-)

They are planning to announce the location on Facebook, I think:

St. Mark's near First Ave., in a space formerly occupied by a location of the Japanese mini-chain Sunrise Mart, is what I've heard.

Thanks, I figured you'd be on top of it. Seems like he'd have to raise the prices in that neighborhood, though.

regarding prices and seeing scoopG's notes below . . . the Bourdain halo effect? the man already has the finest web presence of any vendor I know of and maybe he can maintain prices while raking in the dough.

regarding location, a second floor spot for that kind of food seems like a bad idea; maybe if he took the JAS Mart space (I don't think its available though) that would be good. BAMN turned into Baoguette right? Maybe he should take those small sliver spaces like the $1 pizza place, or that soup place (or is that already gone as well?)

Sunrise Mart wasn't on St. Marks and First, it was on Stuyvesant near 3rd ave.

The former Seoul Station (and before that Temple Korean) at St. Marks & FIrst is an open space--any chance it's going in there?

I did confuse my Asian mini-chains, maggiej; I was thinking of the JAS Mart an avenue block west. (But Sunrise Mart, I'll add, not only was but still is in business on Stuyvesant.) When I walked past St. Mark's/First Ave. today, the most likely space for a new Xi'an Famous Foods was indeed the former Seoul Station, though it's newspapered over with no permits in sight.

As for your initial post, soupçon: Seoul --> Sol --> Sun? (There's a stretch for you.)
