Family friendly along 78

  • 7

My family and I are headed west to Phillipsburg,NJ to the train station there. We are meeting another family along the way for lunch. Any suggestions for non-chain family friendly (kids under 5) restaurants west of the jct of 287 and 78?

Thanks in advance!

    1. The diner in Clinton, exit 16 I think, is decent.

      1. Clinton Station Diner, it is right next to the highway.

        1. While I agree that Clinton may be the best place for you to meet I would avoid the Clinton Station Diner which, imho, is very ordinary. You can do much better at the Country Griddle, which is also just off Route 78W. They don't seem to have a web site but here's a link that should prove helpful:

When it comes to food, your best bet would be the Fine Diner which is located in Clinton on a road that runs parallel to Route 78W. The food is absolutely wonderful, as is the value. However, and it's a big however, this place is very busy at lunch and you might have to wait a long time to get a table large enough to accommodate your group. You would have a much better chance after 1 PM. I don't know if they take reservations. Phone them and ask.

Finally, the restaurant with the best location is definitely Nino's by the River, a fairly new place located where the Old River House used to be. I was never a big fan of Nino's at its old location but I've heard a few good things about the new spot. You can sit outside, right next to the South Branch of the Raritan River. On a nice day it's absolutely spectacular.

I love Charlie's Pool Room but I'm not convinced it's the best place for kids under 5. On the other hand, if everyone agrees on hot dogs for lunch.....!
