Best Classic Diner Food Around Detroit, MI (Near DTW Metro Airport)

Hi!

My friends and I are going to be around the DTW airport area in Detroit, MI tomorrow for 6 hours until our flight. We love diner food! Anyone with good recs within a 30 minute driving distance of the airport? We need to stay close. Thank you!

  1. I live near the airport and eat everywhere I can....but I have to say that I am not thinking of any great Diner places in the area. About the closest place of interest I can think of is the Bomber in Ypsilanti.

Thanks for the tip! I think so long we can get back to the airport in an hour, we can even go to Lansing. Not Grand Rapids though, too far. :)

How about a coney island? I think a coney island restaurant is typical diner fare. I don't know the area, but there must be one nearby. Maybe even at the airport.

I may be wrong, but I think there is a Leo's at the airport. If there is not, there is one a few miles North of the airport exit. I-275 exit 25 or 28, I believe.

Actually the McNamara terminal has 2 coneys, but they are both National Coney Islands. One is a sit-down, full service coney. The other is a stand-up-and-eat place. They both have good coneys and fries, and the sit-down one has decent breakfasts, sandwiches, etc. I've recently eaten at both and have had no complaints.

Ah, I knew it was one of the franchises. National is not bad, although the Wixom location has been a bit of a disappointment the copuple of times I have gone there.

Exit 25 is Ford Rd, and there's a Leo's a few miles west at Canton Center Rd; Exit 28 is Ann Arbor Rd, and you'd have to go west to Sheldon then north to find the Leo's. I think the closest location to the airport is probably Taylor (Telegraph S of Wick Rd).

There is Leos right off exit 28 Ann Arbor rd. Head west, maybe a mile but I think Its less then that. The Leo's is just past the corner of Haggerty and Ann Arbor Rd. Right by the police station. Stay on Ann Arbor rd past Haggerty and it will be on your right just past the CVS (CVS is directly on the corner of Haggerty and Ann Arbor Rd.) This one is a lot closer to the 275 then either listed above.

Oops, you're right. Forgot about that one.

      2. about 15 minutes from the airport is Pete's Place on Telegraph. Really good diner food.

        1. Thank you all for your tips! We checked out Leos and loved it. Sadly, we couldn't stay long enough to try the rest. As for coney island, we were from NY, 15 minutes from the area Coney Island (lol) so we passed on that.

          Thanks again everybody!

:) Who knew? Now I got something new to check out when we're back there. Awesome!

I think the Leo's you went to was a Coney actually, but you need to visit Lafayette and American Coney's Downtown and have a taste test. The Friday night (June 4th) at 10:30 pm they are showing a new Food Network show "Food Feud", and half the show will be comparing those too Coney's.
