Persian soup- Ash Reshteh in Berkeley
The Middle East Market in Berkeley has wonderful kabobs and persian/afghan bread at great prices. See this post for more info on kabobs: ( http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/677629?tag=quick_reviews;review7916#5289340 ) and this one about bread ( http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/6711... ). This post is about Ash Reshteh.
Last week, while waiting in the recently redecorated space for my lamb kabob they offered me a taste of Ash Reshteh, a Persian vegetable and noodle soup that was fantastic. Clear broth with kidney, white and garbanzo beans, noodles, and lots of shredded leafy greens including a nice minty-ness made this soup a real winner. The neighborhood could use more soups so this is a great addition. They have it fresh on certain days as well as frozen to take away and heat up when the need arises. Since i had my kabob already I took one of the frozen pints ($4.99) and ate it at home for dinner with some of the skateboard sized flat bread that they make here. The soup was fresh tasting and soul nourishing. I can't wait to try some of the other options at this little gem of a shop.
