good to great nachos at non-chain restaurants/pubs 2010

I'm trying to come up with a list of places serving nachos that would be worth the TTC trip.

So far, I have Mitzi's Sister and Utopia on my list, and possibly Sneaky Dee's.

The nachos at the Granite Brewery were not good, and the Old Nick's version was average at best.

What other restaurants/pubs would you recommend?

  1. I've always liked the ones at La Hacienda on Queen West. Huge portions too.

    1. mitzi's are 1/2 price on mondays

      1. I die for the nachos at Mitzi's Sister and Utopia!!! Oh my gosh. So good. The beans do it, for both of them.

I had great nachos at Loons on Roncesvalles. They have such a great back patio — perfect for nacho eating. The nachos at Axis on Dundas West at Quebec are pretty good. They are not spectactular, but I had them on Friday and they made me happy.

Thanks Sarah Cat- hadn't heard anything about the nachos at Loons or Axis before. Will keep both in mind, esp. if I'm in the neighbourhood.

Really liked the Utopia Nachos at Utopia- with beans, as well as chunks of steak and chicken. Right amount of cheese, and not too soggy. Generous portion, too.
            Best I've had lately.

Hope to try out the other indie restos/pubs mentioned on this thread!

Ordered the Utopia Nachos at Utopia again last week. Kind of soggy this last time. Still generous with the toppings.

Discovered that I like Utopia's poutine with mushrooms, goat cheese and gravy better than nachos!

I love the Utopia nachos, but find that I usually get a soggy batch every now and then (i.e. 4 out of 5...I used to get the nachos every week and my gut has paid dearly). Still not enough to keep me away though, since when they're done right, they are one of the best in town (and cheap).

I've had the nachos at RealSports, and while tasty, they were way too rich for my blood: $13.99 + $3 guac (homemade, chunky, and delicious) + $3 chicken. I'll be sticking with Utopia.

          2. I haven't tried them, but the ones at Tortilleria look fantastic. Not a licensed establishment, though.

Why do you care if it's a chain or not. Good nacho's are good nacho's. The firkin pubs and keg both have good nacho's.

some people care if they give their money to local folks as opposed to corporations

                1. re: C mac

I don't like the nachos at The Firkin pubs or The Keg.

Why do I care? Because I like to support smaller businesses in TO.

                2. re: Snarf

Thanks Snarf. Have added it to the list.

                3. i had nachos at disgraceland the other night, and they were huge and good.

also, they have deep fried mars bars.

I forgot the disgraceland nachos!!! They are DELICIOUS.

Thanks for the rec ;-) Disgraceland is on my shortlist ;-)

                    2. Some of my favourite spots are.. Cams Place (with the pulled pork.. but skip the pico de galo unless its tomato season) and Brydens place (also with the pork).

I cannot believe that you didn't like the nachos at Granite Brewery. I agree with most that the food is at best sub par but I always enjoy the nachos when I am there.

I do like them. I order them everytime I go. Its the only reason I do go, and Im there fairly often. They're not my FAVOURITE.. my problem is that I find they are soggy in some places. But I still thoroughly enjoy them.
