Wild mustard greens anyone?

I grew up in the S. Bay area during a time when fruit orchards were abundant and ate foraged wild mustard greens. They are recognizable by their yellow flowers. Have a childhood longing and wonder who else grew up eating them. My parents were Filipino immigrants but have heard that Italians from the old country also enjoy them. I've purchased something that I mistook for them at the farmers market. Spark any memories?

  1. I just discovered mustard greens at farmer's market here in SWFL this past winter/spring (most of them will be closed for the hot, rainy summer coming up) so I have not had them growing wild like you have but boy oh boy, I really love them!!! I'm kind of getting into eating weeds in general now, too...dandelion greens are another wild green that I love. Am looking to try purslane now also; haven't tasted it yet but I'd probably like it!

    1. Almost a year since my original post and I am pleased to say that I went mustard picking this afternoon with a fellow wild greens lover. Did an internet search for recipes and my old post came up as a result. Anyone been eating any free greens out there?

Actually, almost TWO years from the original post!

I've harvested wild mustard a couple of times, but not nearly as much as I'd like to. I'm always afraid that it may have been sprayed with something noxious and hazardous.
