TOTALE, new wood fired oven pizza place

A new pizza place named TOTALE with a wood fired oven just opened on 8th St. (St. Marks) just west of Second Ave. Haven't tried it yet. It seemed that at least one new pizza place a week has been opening in East Village in the past few months though this one is different because of its oven.

  1. Walked by Totale today and saw that they're have a special price of $5.00 for a 12" Margherita pizza. Is this the beginning of "Pizza Wars?"

      2BROS PIZZA a few doors west of Totale is busy no matter what time I pass by. At $2.75 for two slices and a soda it must be the main "food group" for many NYU students. It probably won't make the list of any pizza gourmet but their customers don't read those lists.

      1. You cannot put a $5 pizza margherita out there without attracting me like a moth to flame. It was certainly worth $5. The crust is very good, with a nice char on the bottom and puffy edges. The sauce is fine (if a little too sweet and overcooked for my taste), and the cheese is...cheese. Not exactly good cheese. Decent cheese. The basil was applied with an absurdly stingy hand, though, and seemingly before, not after, the pizza was baked. This is just wrong. That said, two can easily make a good quality meal of one pie and the $5 arugula and parmesan salad, and have money left over for drinks after. I speak from experience.

        Because the walls are tiled, it's kinda loud in there. It wasn't crowded, and no one was screaming, but I could hear every word from the surrounding tables. But it's an in-and-out sort of place, so if this troubles you, it won't for long.

        1. I liked the crust very much. The pie bubbles within moments of being slid into the oven, and you get some nice blisters and the mix of chewy and crispy. Shoot me, but I liked it better than Motorino. Toppings are fairly simple, and the price is currently ridiculous. Worth a try.

          1. $5...you can't complain about that. Had I paid $9, I'm not so sure.

            The sauce was much too sweet, and I like a sweeter sauce. The cheese was odd, but I was glad it was there. My crust didn't have the char I was hoping. Actually, half the pizza did, but the other half was undercooked, and was overly chewy in a doughy kind of way. Still, for the price, I'm thrilled it's there. I probably enjoyed the $1 pizza truck over this, based on flavors, but I bet Totale is a bit luck of the draw as to what you get. It was near empty on a Saturday night by the way.

            1. Went by Saturday afternoon and had their arugula salad and margarita pizza, five dollars each. You can't get a deal like this in NYC but you can now here at least for the present. The salad was very nice with a mild but tasty dressing and big shaved slices of parmesan. The pizza crust was baked just right but I like it better with a little less dough for a thinner crust, The sauce could have a bit more character but at this price and with very nice table service I'll be back there again.

               
               
               
              1. Sad to report Totale is no more. Windows have been papered since last month. Too bad I liked them and the price was a great deal but with their own dollar slice joint a few doors west they were their own competition.

                  According to EV Grieve, Totale is under renovation & will reopen as a "fancy" slice place.
