Landing at JAX at 9am and driving north. Breakfast ideas?

We have a painfully early flight from NYC to Jacksonville this weekend and would like to fortify ourselves shortly after arriving. The very idea of Denny's/Bob Evans/WaffleHouse/Friendy's/IHOP fills us with an irreconcilable sense of dread. What are our non-corporate options? Call us gluttons, but BBQ would not go amiss, even at this early hour! Thanks.

That's a tough one, q. You're too far north to pick up anything much in Jax, and the trek north to Brunswick and the exit to get to the Georgia Pig for 'cue is a bit too far away to give you the sustenance you seek in a timely manner. The closest breakfast type thing that comes to mind (other than a Hardee's breakfast biscuit, that is) is a Cracker Barrel in the shopping area on the other side of I-95 on the Airport Road aka Duval Road (go under the overpass and further down to the "Town Center" area - you'll see the sign), bu that won't help you much with that sense of dread.

If you were going into town it would be a different matter, but you're a little early for BBQ even down here - most don't serve till at least 11 or so.

Not much here, but that's all I got. I'm not a Northside guy - maybe one will show up and school both of us. There's no substitute for local knowledge.

Thanks for your message. I'm still holding out hope that someone has managed to salvage a little individuality along I-95!

you know there really isn't anything I am aware of ( and I drive up to Ga frequently) on I-95 that isn't a chain. I don't know what your tastes are, or where you are going, or how hungry you will be, but I think your best bet for non-chain breakfast would be to get off 95, drive up 17 and in Kingsland you will have your choice of several mom and pop places. They will be the grits, eggs and bacon type places, and I don't know if they will be good, but they won't be chains. You may want to post on the southeast board to see if any one (i.e Beteez) can give you some info.

Everyting by the interstate is a chain. Best bet at a chain is ham or sausage biscuit @ Hardees across interstate. I have not had breakfast @ Aunt Bee's in St Marys. they do a decent country lunch appeal to construction workers, I imagine pork is well represented they have fried fatback everyday at lunch. It is around 3 miles off of 95, Ga exit 2 go east to Wakmart, take a left past Hospital in strip center on right.
Also if you are alittle late for an early lunch in Darien @ B&J's either a country buffet or fresh local fried shrimp.

Thanks for all this info--- We DIDNT find breakfast as we stayed on 95 on the way north, but when we returned we took 17 south instead from Savannah to Brunswick and found many little places to stop-- we had boiled shrimp and Brunswick stew (no squirrel, alas) in a place on a river about 15 miles north of the big bridge to Brunswick( Mud river?? I can't recall the name now...)-- We recommend taking 17 (as we will do if we take this route again) 4-5 bbq places and several small simple joints along the way
