Lovely dinner Saturday evening at Bloom - BWV

So....my friends who live year round in Wasaga Beach, wanted to come to the city for the long weekend...too much traffic, too many crowds...

They came and stayed at my place and, as a 'thank you' too me to Bloom for dinner on Saturday...what an enjoyable meal...

It was hopping when we got there...we were seated at a large round table at the back of the restaurant...the service was just right...attentive but not intrusive..

I was the only one who had a starter...gazpacho...but not a traditional "soup" just a lovely big bowl of wonderful tasting chopped heirloom tomatoes, basil, olive oil...definitely a nice preview of summer...it was served along with a basil "muffin"...nice.

My friend "the wife" and I had one of the daily specials...veal chop with a blue cheese sauce served with wild leeks and a sweet potato pancake...delicious. The meat was tender and perfectly cooked...the sauce was piquant and went very well with the veal...the leeks were tasty but very hard to handle...just would not cut easily...had to handle them like pasta...twirlling on my fork. "The husband" had steak frites...a nicely cooked large New York strip on a bed of very yummy frites (he shared).

The wife was the only one who had dessert...something called a "peanut butter and jam sandwich"...she was literally moaning with pleassure and it looked amazing...bread pudding topped with jam and then a peanut butter and jam sauce over all...she finished every bit and said she would really have liked to lick the plate!!!

We found the wine prices a bit steep...but a nice variety...

The young chef, Nigel Finley came out and spoke to each table...very charming...

All in all a very enjoyable evening...I will be back for sure...

  1. I agree -- it is a gem. We've eaten there many times. Nigel did his time up north with Stadtlander. He is young and adventurous and is also, glad to say, extremely talented. My guess is that he'll be a force to be reckoned with in five to ten years when he's at the top of his game. My only concern is that he overseasons from time to time and that (I can't believe I'm writing this), the portions might be considered too big.

The veal. I think. is a winter menu staple. His starters by the way are almost all sublime -- the guy can cook foie gras extremely well and the lobster bisque is right up there with Scaramouche's.

    1. I also have to agree. The food is great! The beef tenderloin dish is something I still dream about. Great addition to BWV.

      1. Thanks guys...when I didn't get any input after my post I was beginning to wonder...it really is a nice local place with interesting food in the hands of a talented chef.
