French restarunts in MSP/ Surrounding <$30?

greenidentity May 23, 2010 04:33 PM

Me and Mr. H are looking for a nice French place to go for our anniversary. It looks like there are many that I can't afford. We are looking for somewhere where we can get a substantial meal and experience in the $$-$$$ (tops) range. Any suggestions?

    If I were ranking these things, I would go with:

    1. Meritage - One of St. Paul's best restaurants which is why you see it on here so much.

    2. Volnay Bistro in Wayzata. Charming little space in downtown Wayzata. A nice walk along Lake Minnetonka after to work off the meal.

    3. Cafe Vin: I think the dining room itself is awful, but the food makes up for whatever it lacks.

      Thank you all for the suggestions! Db - Volnay is close to home and one of our favorites for lunch, but have never tried the dinner...And Cave Vin has been on our minds a lot, along with Chez Daniel - but now I will have to consider Meritage! Decisions! Well, we still have a week to decide!

        Meritage would be my first preference.

        However, Pierre's Bistro might be the best if you are cost conscious...you can get half off gift cards to Pierre's online (try www.halfoffdeals.com or www.halfofftwincities.com

        )

          In a similar vein, you might consider Chez Daniel. Coupons abound, and the food is a cut above your typical hotel-based joint. The service is endearingly incompetent, but I quite enjoy the lamb.

        I would try Cave Vin. Excellent French bistro food at a modest price.

          I second Cave Vin. Good food and also a nice atmosphere for an anniversary- open room in the back but more private tables up front.

            If the <$30 applies to entrees only, you could certainly go to Meritage in St. Paul. Delicious and most, but not all, of their entrees are under $30. My other suggestion would be Ngon Bistro on University in St. Paul. Their French entrees (particularly the elk medallions) are amazing!

            Happy Anniversary!

              Is that combined? Each for an entree? What is the total for the bill you want to spend?
