Cheapest place to buy tempeh in downtown Toronto

Sheikah May 21, 2010 05:26 PM

I've been looking around for a place where I can buy the cheapest tempeh in the city - from a grocers that is, not a restaurant. I understand that things like tofu and whatnot is quite pricey from health food stores, so this might be a futile hunt, but I figured there was no harm in trying.

So far I've checked out Noah's and this one health shoppe near Charles and Bay, whose name escapes me, and they were both selling packaged tempeh at around $4-$5.

Again, I'm sure that you probably won't be able to find tempeh cheaper than that...but a poor student can always try! :P

For clarification, I'm looking mainly for plain, packaged tempeh, but if there's some place that sells those already-flavoured ones for relatively cheap then I'd appreciate getting a heads-up on those too! :)

Does the St. Lawrence Market count as downtown? Ying Ying Soy Foods, in the basement, has a wide range of wonderful soy products including tempeh, although their tofu is by far my favourite in the city! Prices are great too - not the crazy basement prices you can find along Spadina in Chinatown, but still quite affordable.

Not sure why noone has replied to this but it's probably Essence of Life in Kensington. Lots of selection, too, both marinated and plain, frozen and not.
