Where to eat in the Mission near the Roxie Theater

It's been a long, long time since I ate in the Mission. Someplace quick when I go to the B noir festival ths week. Burritos/tacos would be fine. Years ago I used to go to Tacqueria San Jose.

  1. The closest taqueria is Pancho Villa, but I find them overrated. I would walk the extra few blocks to Taqueria Cancun. Note that El Toro Taqueria is a clone of Pancho Villa.

ay ay ay vulber.... i would say the exact opposite! so sad when good minds disagree.... but i guess that's actually a really good thing.... where would we be if we all liked the same taqueria? in really long lines!

to be fair, i'll be the first to admit taht i rarely order anything besides a carne asada burrito at a taqueria, and if i do, it's carne asada something else. therefore, my unscientific rankings are mostly based on the quality of carne asada burritos

Carne Asada at Pancho Villa is not the right order. I go Carnitas or Al Pastor quesilla suiza. Love how they grill 'em then stuff 'em.

    2. A slightly closer option than Cancun would be Taqueria El Buen Sabor, which falls between Cancun and Pancho Villa qualitywise for me.

      1. Depends on what kind of taco or burrito.

I 2nd Cancun for the al pastor, quesadilla suiza or veggie burrito.

If distance is an issue I'd to Taqueria La Cumbre which is basically across the street the Roxie and get the pollo asada. They do a really good job with that.

Pretty much next door to the Roxie is Truly Mediterranean. Tasty and fast Greek/Med food.

If you have more time, perhaps Ti Couz right across the street.

The plato de camarones (w/ rice and beans) at Pancho Villa is good (better then the burritos). It's a nice change-up for quick food.

        1. Truly Mediterranean is right next store and is always good!

I was mostly basing my recommendations upon the poster's love of Taqueria San Jose in the past. Plenty of other good eats nearby.

Continuing with my blasphemy, I much prefer Ali Baba's Cave to Truly Mediterranean. Cheaper, bigger, tastier.

I also tried Urbun Burger for the first time the other night and was very impressed. If you are going for lunch and before the end of the month, you could go to Mission Burger, which is incredible, but they are closing at the end of the month and have limited hours.

For tacos, there's also La Oaxaquena.

And for more upscale/sitdown, there's Monk's Kettle and Bar Bambino.

There was no indictment of your recommendations intended. I was replying to the original post.
Since Truly Med. is right next store it fit the "quick" and easy request.
Personally I think that I prefer T.M.'s Falafel to Ali Baba's but bigger and cheaper do not figure in to my opinion very much.

              1. re: chefj

I probably should have phrased it as "Not only is it better, but it's also bigger and cheaper", taste is definitely still the most important part of a good falafel sandwich.

Also saw today that Little Star Valencia is going to be open at noon Tues-Sun. starting June 1

          2. Monk's kettle is excellent - top quality beer, good food. The downside is that they tend to have a line and are pretty full.

Better would be Frijz - you order at the counter and then sit down. Mussels, large french fry + sauce selection, burgers and. AND. Belgian beer on tap and in the bottle. Quick service.

            1. Puerto Allegre has been my go-to place for nachos and a carne asada (wet) burrito since forever. Their menu has grown up over the years, but our order there is deeply etched into our psyche. Its popular, so the wait may exclude it from the 'someplce quick' category.

Little Star Pizza is another favorite, which also can get crowded. Same goes for Pauline's Pizza.

Sunflower definitely fits the 'quick' category and it could not be more convenient. Not a destination, best-of-sf vietnamese place, but I've always been satisfied with their pho.

Frjtz might fit your bill. I only go there for their fries which are god's answer to the munchies, but the mussels and burgers look good. Nice beer selection too.
