Meeting friends in Freehold saturday night. Which restaurant is better for authentic Mexican food (not tex-mex).
Thanks!

Went to El Meson last night for dinner after haven't been there for a long while. Good food but certainly overpriced especially when they are charging $7.99 for my kid's taco.
Enjoyed the meal but will probably look for different option next time in Freehold.

El Familliar is no longer there. The space now goes by another name. We tried it and won't return. Don't know that I'd say El Meson is "authentic Mexican food", but it sure is tasty.

El Meson is good food, but, as jsfein said, not authentic and more like Tex Mex. The few little authentic Mexican places in Freehold are all lousy to worse. The closest good authentic Mexican food is in Red Bank at North of the Border.

i may never be sure what truly authentic mexican food tastes like, but today's grilled lamb tacos with guacamole and chile de arbol salsa at El Meson was about as good a lunch as I've had in a long time...

Authentic Mexican does not feature melted jack or cheddar cheese, and often does not feature chips and chunky salsa on the tables (some do make that concession).

I'm not sure I'd suggest North of the Border as a place to meet friends. the food is great , but they have no tables. A more suitable place might be Acapulquenos in Long Branch.

Good call Mark - good food and room to sit there.

I dont know what you guys are talking about, but i was there Saturday Night, with my wife and my kids, and I had the best combination tacos with pork, lamb and chicken with spicy arbol sauce. my wife had the chicken enchiladas rancheras. she said it was the bom-digidy! my two kids had the chimichanga stuffed with pork and there had the burrito with vegetables. they both said it was excellent. we have been to all mexico: cancun, puerto vallarta, conzumel & mexico city, and we were very surprised how good the food at el meson was in freehold, we loved it and we are going back again.

Necro-thread--the posting you're replying to is over two years ago, and El Familiar isn't even there any more.

PLUS !OO for NOB...the BEST, most authentic Mexican restaurant around. And they're very nice people to boot. If you're looking for the real thing....look no further than NOB.

Salsa Latina in Matawan is a good choice on et 34

Salsa Latina is a Puerto Rican establishment...

In Matawan, we like Pancho Villa's and El Pollo y La Oaxaquena (which may actually be in Hazlet or something).

tell us more about pancho villa and el pollo place? Always looking for close by mexican places to add to our list. Agree that El Meson is good, but trying to add variety/more options.
