El Meson or El Familiar in Freehold?
Meeting friends in Freehold saturday night. Which restaurant is better for authentic Mexican food (not tex-mex).
Thanks!

El Familliar is no longer there. The space now goes by another name. We tried it and won't return. Don't know that I'd say El Meson is "authentic Mexican food", but it sure is tasty.

re: jsfein
El Meson is good food, but, as jsfein said, not authentic and more like Tex Mex. The few little authentic Mexican places in Freehold are all lousy to worse. The closest good authentic Mexican food is in Red Bank at North of the Border.

re: aklein
Authentic Mexican does not feature melted jack or cheddar cheese, and often does not feature chips and chunky salsa on the tables (some do make that concession).
I'm not sure I'd suggest North of the Border as a place to meet friends. the food is great , but they have no tables. A more suitable place might be Acapulquenos in Long Branch.

re: equal_Mark
I dont know what you guys are talking about, but i was there Saturday Night, with my wife and my kids, and I had the best combination tacos with pork, lamb and chicken with spicy arbol sauce. my wife had the chicken enchiladas rancheras. she said it was the bom-digidy! my two kids had the chimichanga stuffed with pork and there had the burrito with vegetables. they both said it was excellent. we have been to all mexico: cancun, puerto vallarta, conzumel & mexico city, and we were very surprised how good the food at el meson was in freehold, we loved it and we are going back again.
