Telepan or Ouest
If you had to choose between the two, which...and why? The price for Telepan's four-course tasting menu is fantastic, and the food looks great. But...have heard great things about Ouest as well. We're staying in a studio apartment on the UWS on 85th, very close to Central Park. We have one night for a foodie date night before the rest of our party comes to town the next day.

Have also been to both and Dovetail as well as mentioned by someone else. My choices would be in the following order:
Telepan
Dovetail
OuestNothing wrong with Ouest, just think the other two are better.

Ouest is definitely a little richer, more comfort food based. The tripe, smoked sturgeon, egg souffles, and any braised dish are terrific. I find telepan a little more refined, and that they follow seasons a little more literally, with mains getting getting lighter in summer and spring. Ouest does this as well, but not as much as Telepan. Both have great bars and bartenders, as well. Ouest can be a little darker and more intimate (depending where seated) where as Telepan seemed a little more airy and spaced out to me.
I like both, and you won't go wrong with either. I'd also look into Dovetail on W 77th. They have great deals on prix fixe meals on Sunday and Monday nights, and the food there is as good there (maybe a bit more creative with flavors and pairings) than the other 2.
Either way you go, you should have a great meal.-----

re: UWSEater
Good take on the differences between Telepan and Ouest, and I agree - although I prefer Ouest (the egg souffle is one of my favorites). Both, for my money, are better than Dovetail, which I found good but not as consistently satisfying overall.

re: drumwine
Just looking at the menu, Telepan reminds me quite a bit of Gary Danko in San Francisco. That place is easily one of my top 5 meals of all time. If this can even come close, I'll be a happy gal :)! We're also having dinners at Balthazar and BLT Prime...and I just got a reservation for a new dinner called Bubbles After Broadway at Aureole for after we see Wicked. For $35, you get a glass of champagne, entree, and dessert. Seems like an inexpensive way to try a great restaurant!!
