Update on Moosewood?

I'll be driving through Ithaca, and would like to know whether people think it's worth a stop for a meal or whether there are better places to go in Ithaca. I've cooked from Moosewood cookbooks for years.

Most of my friends LOVE Moosewood, but I also have a gastronomically interesting group of friends including a vegan, vegetarian, celiac, and two almost exclusive egg white and salad eaters. I'm an omnivore and have only been there once, and the one time I went I was really not impressed considering all the hype. I had some kind of eggplant pasta dish and it was good but not great, it tasted more home-cooked than restaurant quality.

In my opinion there are much better places to go in Ithaca, but if you're looking for vegetarian and if you're interested in Moosewood as an institution then it could be worth it. Aladdin's is a mediterranean restaurant that has a lot of vegetarian and natural food options and I like it much better than Moosewood.

If you have any interest in going there- go there. It is a one of a kind restaurant. In a good way

I recommend going for lunch. The menu changes daily, but there are always a few soups, salad (with their wonderful dressings), sandwiches (available in half or whole portions), and a few hot entrees. The prices are very reasonable for the portion size, and I find it's not as busy during the day.

I went once probably six or seven years ago and left feeling like it was overhyped, but I'm glad some friends convinced me to try it again. It's one of my favorite places for lunch downtown now.

I was very un-impressed. I was very excited to visit the place that started it all for me. I had been advised that it would be better for lunch but thought the recommendation came from someone with "sour grapes." I couldn't wait to go the moment we pulled in to town.

The location is run down and a bit dirty. Atmosphere was bright, the carpet was dirty, the table was sticky and I had to return both glassware and utensils with dried food and lipstick.

The menu for dinner included only 4 entrees plus soups, salads and apps. The Vegetable Stew could have double for Vegi chili. The flavors of the phylo wrapped Asian noodles did not meld together at all. Everything was fresh but un- imaginative.

I know the Moosewood was on the forefront of the vegetarian movement years and years ago but the industry has taken the concept and "ran with it." while this establishment rests on it's laurels and has remained in the 80's.
