Second Weekend of Jazz Fest Review
My wife and I lived in New Orleans for 4 years and try to visit as often as possible, this year we went for jazz fest. I apologize for the spelling a format up front.
Apps - Fried Boudin – loved these, for their crisp outside and gooey boudin inside. I have been trying to make these at home and haven’t gotten the outside the right consistency, but tasting Mr. Link’s version was outstanding.
Wood Fired Oysters – These were some of the best cooked oysters I have ever had. Large and plump with great smoky flavor, but not overcooked. Downside was only 3 to a plat.
Shrimp and Deviled Egg Gumbo – This was another great dish, and the egg was a nice touch I have never had with Gumbo.
Entrées - Cochon with turnips cabbage and cracklins – I can’t get enough pulled pork and this might be the best I have had. Love how they ball it up and lightly pan fry it for a crispy exterior look, but it is so juicy and succulent. Not usually a big cabbage fan, but the turnips and cabbage are and excellent pairing with this meal. Not enough cracklins though.
Wife had the rabbit and dumplings which I did not try, but she stated were excellent. We shared a side of smothered greens, which were also very tasty, and there were a ton.
For desert we had the catdaddy moonshine, which has a strong nutmeg and vanilla flavor, which was a perfect way to end a great meal.
It was a very electric night a Cochon as there was a table directly behind us with Nic Cage, Eddie Veder, Tim Robins and several of the REM guys with quite and entourage.
Mahony’s – had the gravy smothered fries and split a peacemaker. To much food for two people, but the roast beef gravy was very rich and stood out to me. John Goodman walked in as sweaty as could be and walked out with a couple of po boys to go.
Cooter Browns – Split a Muffaleta, which was slightly warmed. It was good, but not great. Prefer central market, also had a dozen yummy oysters, your typical big plump gulf oyster. The beer selection was great and I had a Chimay on tap, which is one of my favorite beers.
Po Boy/Market – corner of St. Charles and Washington – ate at this store with a shrimp po boy a couple of days we were short on time, but was impressed at the quality and cost.
Palace Café Diner
We had an outstanding diner at Palace Café. We were lucky enough to meet one of the chefs at palace café and he really made our meal outstanding with a couple of unexpected surprises.
Apps: We had BBQ Shrimp which I thought were great and you could really taste the hint of abita in there. Also split the Chicken and Sausage Gumbo, which was very rick and tasty, but a little salty. Then got a surprise of the crab claws which were outstanding as I love garlic and lemon and could really taste the garlic come through.
Entrees: I had the pepper crusted duck breast with foie gras which was amazing. The Duck had a nice pepper flavor to it, but didn’t overpower the duck, which is key and the foie gras was great. Also really enjoyed the mashed parsnip as a change of pace from your typical mashed potatoes and healthier (not that it matters in NOLA). Wife had the Creole seasoned Filet which was cooked to perfection.
Desert we got surprised with Crème Brule and Strawberry Shortcake. I am not a big desert person, but loved the Crème Brule.
Great meal and great service.
The Country Club – A friend of ours took us to the Country Club in the Bywater and we had a great meal. It was late, we had been drinking at the festival all day so I don’t remember the details other than I had the tasso studded meatloaf and was very impressed by the food and prices. I have seen other reviews rip this place for its umm being eccentric and having a clothing optional pool, but neither of these issues bothers us in the least and the food was great at an outstanding price. I would certainly go back and recommend to others.
Jazz Fest food – to many to review, but all were outstanding.
Bars: We hit up cooter browns, parasols, Mimi’s in the Marginy, Bulldog, balcony bar, the Delachaise, Vaughns and others, but spent no time in quarter this trip, which was quite refreshing.
Summary: As usual New Orleans is a wonderful place that always has my heart, with some of the most amazing people on the earth and I hope to spend more time there in the future, but probably won't be during jazz fest except for an occasional jazz fest trip. The food is outstanding as usual as well.
