Sabor Cocina Mexicana - Thousand Oaks

I saw that this place, now in Valencia, is going in the Lakes so I checked it out on line. Two things,1) it is very expensive, and 2) most of the reviews on Yelp were not positive, many complained about the prices, watered down marguertias and lack of seasoning in their food, and as usual, some on the service. Here is an idea of their prices:

Tacos $13/14 (the beef tacos, filet mignon, are $24!!)
Enchiladas $14/18
Burritos $14
A side of Habanero sauce $2

For these prices the reviews should be glowing. I don't know when it's opening but unless I hear something positive about this new location I'm not going there.

Here is their web site:

    1. Can't disagree more, ate there on Sunday, food was fantastic, very tasty, worth the extra money, service was great, the presentation was outstanding, will go again and again, don't let the prices keep you away, plenty of food and very, very tasty!

      1. We thought the food was excellent - definitely a cut above the usual Mexican fare. It was most akin to the Mexico City type restaurants, as opposed to Tex-Mex. The margaritas are the size of your head, and because we had heard they could be watery, we ordered an extra shot of tequila on the side. Truthfully, we hadn't looked at the menu, so we were surprised to find that the drink, with the extra, was $18.00! ($12.00 alone). We decided that we will just ask them to have the bartender to be certain he has added a goodly dose of tequila to the already pricey drink. Other than that, we loved the entire experience. The decor is amazing, and the bar is really a nice place to meet for drinks and chips - not just an "add-on" room.

Well now it seems I'll have to give it a try. This is sure different than the other reports I read. Maybe it's under different management? I'll report back my findings.

        2. Les, I went to the one in Valencia and really wanted to like the place. But I thought as you mentioned, the drinks were watered down, and the food was just plain bland. There was no spice to their salsa, which frankly, also needed salt. I hope the one in your neck of the woods is better.

          1. Generally, Mexican food in the Conejo Valley is a joke. Eight ingredients, plus lard, and you've got a restaurant. You're dealing with a real skeptic when I sit down for Mexican, if I sit down at all.

Thankfully, Sabor is a good exception to that! We went last night for a birthday celebration. The service was prompt and cordial, and our enthusiastic waiter had all the answers.
Mixed drink prices were breathtaking for here; $15 for a single, albeit generous, Margarita.
Ceiling is way too high. Is this a cathedral? Atmosphere was kind of cool, meaning cold, not hip.
Great tasting food presented nicely. I had a $15 Chili Pasilla Relleno that was very good, stuffed with organic chicken (according to the waiter), garnished with queso fresco, and served in a spicy red pepper sauce with a touch of rice. Worth the money. A simple Chili Relleno was had by another member of our party, and she raved. The third had the Enchilada Suizas, three large enchiladas stuffed with chicken and Oaxaca cheese, and she loved it.

The Birthday song by the whole staff is over the top, somewhat off-key, but entertaining and fun; a couple of Spanish verses followed with the traditional English rendition.

The bill for the meals, plus two $8 Chardonnays and a virgin Margarita came to around $74 before tip.
