Upcoming trip to Big Island-Going from Hilo to Volcano and need Rec
For breakfast and lunch- will start from Hilo airport around 9am then drive to volcano and do tourist stuff. Please suggest your best recs for great breakfast and/or lunch ideas.
ken''s house of pancakes in hilo, not far from the airport. it is not gourmet, but it is good, a hilo institution, open 24 hours and you would be hard pressed to find a better example of a "local" diner.
at all costs avoid the food at the volcano house inside the park. get something in volcano village, kiawe kitchen or thai thai restaurant (kilauea lodge is only open for dinner)
Just spent a week on big island. Volcano House is closed for repairs. Kilauea Lodge maybe a bit pricey, but good. They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Check their website for times. Ken's is good for breakfast or lunch.

I'd go to Cafe 100 for some local food but also eggs and that. Try the loco moco. They're the inventor. You can also get plate lunch. The mahi mahi + kailua pig + fried chicken plate is my favorite. Cheap and casual but hearty.

The Hilo Bay Cafe in Hilo is an excellent lunch spot. Very hip and delicious burgers and salads. If I remember right, very tasty sweet potato fires!

Keep recs coming!! Will do Ken's for breakfast then head to Volcano to do the toursit stuff then head back to Hilo after covering as many tourist must see spots as possible. Probably will leave Volcano around 1pm so will have 5 hours to sight see-perhaps via a town that has a MUST have lunch for us to stop by. I know this is food blog but wont mind if you suggest a route that includes a great lunch spot on the way back to Hilo.

A vegetarian option in Volcano Village is the recently opened "Ono Cafe" at Volcano Garden Arts gallery...salads, soups and a bit more, but healthy and fresh with lovely grounds and gallery for a leisurely lunch. Lunch only.
Located at the lower end of the village main drag: Old Volcano Road.
If you are in Volcano on Sunday morning, don't miss the farmer's market...delicious prepared foods to eat or take away, fresh pastries and local coffee, as well as produce and some crafts. Get there early...by 8 am some of the best stuff is gone.

Ning's in Pahoa is excellent. Loved it there and its some of the best Thai food I've ever had. And if you ask for heat - you get heat!
