Idea for hip and new: Lafitte if you can get a reservation for the tent-like structure outside that has nice views of the Bay. (Inside the actual building, it can get loud and I think it's a little too spartan for a romantic date.)

Other ideas: La Mar and Ozumo are reasonably hip, but they are not exactly new.

It varies a bit since they change the menu everyday, although some dishes tend to recur from time to time. (Their website has an archive of previous menus so it's easy to get a feel for what they serve.) I've never had a dish there that I disliked or found uninteresting, although I've had some that I would classify as "nothing special." I have also had a number of dishes that I really liked including their charcuterie plate and a few of the Iberico pork variations. Serving sizes are often on the small side. It's a pity that the bar is so small (six seats) since this place could have been a great place for an after-work drink and an appetizer.

Thank you, the website has fleshed out quite a bit since I looked at it last week. Have you been there for lunch and/or dinner?

I've been there for dinner a bunch of times. Haven't been for lunch.

A couple of more general comments:

The open kitchen is very prominent in the indoor space and if you are into that, there is a counter that provides about seven front-row seats.

Service has come a long way since the early days but is still not flawless. Usually, when it's less than flawless, it's just a matter of timing and coordination as you would expect with a new place. It seems like it is well enough staffed that it should be able to keep up on a busy night except, perhaps, for the tiny bar.
