Just want to make sure that Penang is actually a state in Malaysia, which has nothing to do with 'Panang' or the curry paste. However, Penang is very famous for their own version of laksa.

Thanks to everyone who responded. I ended up stopping by Simpang Asia anyway that evening and they DID indeed have Panang curry paste. It tasted great! My belly was happy...

Try calling Marina Farms. I recall getting various curry pastes there years back. Marina Farms is kinda a closet gourmet store - they're known for their produce which is pretty good, but about 1/3 of their floor space is dedicated to a lot of gourmet-like and ethnic goods.

Penang is one of my absolute FAVORITE curries!!

A little closer than east, my favorite Penang is at Belican Grill in Redondo Beach. Other than that, Indo Cafe on National and Banana Leaf in the Farmers Market. I'm not sure if Simgpang has it, as I've never ordered it, but I sure I would have by now...

D'oh!!! Sorry about that! If Simpang says they don't have it... I'm a bit of a loss... but as you could tell my inability to read your post my brain is a little fried right now... LOL!

LOL, now worries. I may pop in to Simpang Asia this evening just to be sure. The guy sounded like he just wanted to get me off the phone.

at the corner of national and rose - across from hu's szechwan and indo cafe, there's an indonesian grocery store. Can't remember the name, but if you're in the neighborhood, you might check it outl. they have some thai and malay items as well.

Thanks. That store is called Simpang Asia and indeed they do carry it.

That's precisely what I was going to suggest. I've bought red and green curry paste there--I'm pretty sure I saw Panang curry paste there, too, but you might give a call just to make sure.

Thanks for the reply. I called them and they said no. I wonder if he understood what I was saying...I could've sworn I saw it there once.

Well, it's a bit farther east, but how about Bangkok Market:

                    4757 Melrose Ave
                    Los Angeles, CA 90029
                    Neighborhood: Wilshire Center
                    (323) 662-9705

They've got just about every Thai ingredient you could want; I can't imagine they don't have Penang curry paste.

Thank you! That's a little farther than I'd like to trek this evening, but I'll keep them in mind for the future. Should come in handy.
