Girlfriends 40th bday...what will it be? George, Splendido, Lucien or Colborne Lane?

k

Here are the details...

12 people so would love to have private dining (George and the Lane have it)

Most guests are foodies but some have issues with foie gras, duck and lamb (I know, I know...)

Price is not a huge issue although I think $100 tasting menu is the limit.

We live downtown and are not open to going out of the city (even Scaramouche is out of the way).

We have been to Lucien (and loved it) so something new may be nice. With that said...

Thanks for any advice

If you liked Lucien then I would go with CL. Similarly playful approach to food and atmosphere.

I think they are reasonably accommodating about dietary preferences too (I recall a thread indicating that the kitchen had been responsive to working with some allergies, etc.).

And the private room sounds like a plus to your group.

One caveat is that there have been repeated complaints (myself included) about CL's wine and booze offerings. If you're a real wino you may be disappointed... or you may want to inquire about corkage.

I absolutely adore George. I know you indicated private dining, but they have accommodated a large group (10 in my case) on the patio, which I also adore. I always find the food and service exceptionally executed. I always feel like I get "value for money" at George versus Splendido and CL. I find them "ok" or adequate relative to George.

I've been to George and Splendido (both the new and old one) and I think the cuisine at George is much more imaginative than the new Splendido. Service was great and unhurried. My friends and I did the 5 course meal and we were all very happy. There were 4 of us and they served us 2 different tasting menu sets, catered to some dietary restrictions (one of my friends can't eat shellfish).

Second George! Send Chef Loseto a message when making your reservations and he'll design a tasting menu around your ' sans foie gras, duck and lamb criteria '!

Thank you very much for the advice...I think that George is going to be the winner and we live within a 10 minute walk.

Not sure what your 'real' criteria are!
If it's private dining, ONLY George works (CL's private room is too small; Splendido has one but you won't reach their minimum fee at $1200).
If it's a tasting menu, then do you want choices? If so, not sure ANY of the above have it. But, I think, all of the above will put together a 'menu' for 12 people.

But they all have different 'vibes'. George is a bit more hustle and bustle (except in the courtyard which is peaceful); Splendido is more 'sophisticated' with impeccable service; Colborne Lane is more 'off-the wall'and uneven, and Lucien you already know.

I'm pretty sure that Colborne Lane has a second private dining space that can seat up to a dozen or so.

I loved George and the menu is always so trendy. The service is excellent as is the wine. If I could afford it, I'd be there weekly!

Colborne Lane would definitely be more lively...but George will definitely be better for food quality, value and service.

This thread is from last May... presumably the birthday has come and gone (although I wish we'd gotten a full report!).

I went to Colborne 2 months ago on a Friday night and there were literally 6 people in the dining room and 2 people at the bar. My party was a group of 4. The food was good though!
