LOCKED DISCUSSION

Jfood saw the good news from the owners of Blackbird and was wondering if anyone knows if the Chef from Heidi's has any plans.

TIA

  1. He's working on a cookbook.
    Beyond that, I don't know.

    1. You can always check his blog: http://shefzilla.com/

Nothing there ATM, but he does touch on scouting trips for sites and the like.

      1. I have no idea what he's doing, but I'm going to lobby that he open up a new place in the old Vintage on Selby in St. Paul. And I'm not just saying that because he (and his food) would then be in walking distance. :)

Another St. Paul space that would seem well-suited would be Heartland's. It will be opening up within the next month when Lenny Russo moves the restaurant to Lowertown.

I heard The Groveland Tap is going to do something there. Pizza / shared plates?

          1. thanks all...if anyone hears more firm data jfood would appreciate the head's up.

I heard they signed a lease on Lyndale.

                1. re: Latinpig

Where on Lyndale? Where did you hear this?

                  1. re: Latinpig

Maybe thinking of the Blackbird folks? I think they are opening up on Lyndale. Great if not, would love for Stewart and Heidi to open up another similar place (check that, would love them to open up Heidi's again)

                    1. re: babaoriley7

Blackbird is opening on Chicago and 38th.

                      1. re: SmartCookie

Sorry, but this made me chuckle. It's funny how 6 blocks = worlds apart.

                      2. re: babaoriley7

Nope - Blackbird is re-opening on 38th and Nicollet - signage is up and everything.

                        1. re: keithinmpls

Right. If you wander into Cup Foods expecting Blackbird, you have no-one to blame but yourself .

                        2. re: babaoriley7

                          I am not.

                        3. re: Latinpig

Crap. This means my hopes of them coming to St. Paul are dashed.

                          1. re: Latinpig

I was with you all along. Nice scoop.

                        4. To sum up. Lease signed. 29th and Lyndale. Old Vera's spot. Possible full liquor license.

Who has a solid source they can cite?

Per Dara, it was rumor as of July 16. And her commenters, including Kate NG Sommers, have confirmed nothing.

If true, I'm very happy. Just blocks from my house. Hooray for Lyn/Lake!

                              1. re: Latinpig

I'm confused. It seems there are a lot of guesses in the comments, maybe you know something else we don't?

                                1. re: babaoriley7

The old Vera's spot sounds likely to me. The guesses are about Blackbird, not Heidi's.

                                  1. re: faith

My source is the proverbial horses mouth. Rock solid. I know nothing about Blackbirds plans.

                                    1. re: Latinpig

Per Blackbirds Facebook, and a post above, they have signed at 38th and Nicollet.

                                  2. re: babaoriley7

It is not a guess. They signed a lease for the 29th and Lyndale spot. They hope to be open in October and to have a full liquor license. Dara does not know everthing.

                                    1. re: Latinpig

What Dara knows is that she has a rumor she cannot confirm. What Kate NG Sommers knows is that she has information she cannot share. And somewhere in between is Andrew Zimmern who has a rumor and says no more.

I'm actually glad to see those local bloggers considering that "first to publish" is not the be-all & end-all of broadcasting other people's doings. I admire the restraint on the part of DM, KS, AZ.

Apparently Dara took some heat for not jumping on the bandwagon when there was so much juicy gossip circulating about Tim McKee et al. If she is holding on to a bit of a standard that seems to have been generally discarded, and KS and AZ are doing the same, good for them.

I have confirmed it and it will be announced very shortly.

                                        1. re: Latinpig

what's weird is that as of Sunday there was a 'For Lease' sign up on Vera's.

It's on the Strib, confirmed as Vera's old haunt.

                                      2. re: Latinpig

Chef Woodman just confirmed this info on his blog.

                                        Happy day!

                                  3. While we understand that there is intense interest in this not-yet-re-opened restaurant, Chowhound's goal is to help everyone eat better right now.

We're going to lock this now, and we ask that there be no further updates here until the place is actually ready to re-open.
