Baked pork buns at Lung Fung Bakery in SF

Melanie Wong May 15, 2010 11:40 AM

Armed with Cynsa's rec for the baked char siu bao, my mom and I stopped by Lung Fung Bakery on Wednesday morning.

Hot from the warming oven, the large bun was 90¢. I bought one and took it out to the car for Mom to taste. Filled generously with chopped barbecue pork swathed with gravy, the very light textured bread was barely sweet. Mom gave the okay, and asked me to go back in to buy six more. The counter lady said she could put them in a box and give me seven buns for $6. Sold!

What else is good here?

How does it compare with the char siu bao from Cafe Bakery? That's my standard for CSB, But at $1.35 each, I wouldn't mind looking for a cheaper alternative (especially for occasions when I have to buy several dozens) :-)

These are a little smaller than Cafe Bakery's. I miss the winey notes of Cafe Bakery's filling but the quallty there has gone down in the last year. I like the lightness of the bread at Lung Fung better.

That said, my favorite are the smaller sized buns at TC Pastry on Irving Street.

Thanks for the rec. TC Pastry has always been one of my favorite places for take out dim sum. However, i have never had their CSB until your recommendation. This past weekend, i finally tried their CSB and enjoyed it very much. The texture of the bread is reminiscent of Cafe Bekery's, The filling is not as highly seasoned (i.e., salty) as Cafe Bakery, which is a good thing. Overall, a very good CSB and at 3 for $1.60 (or was it $1.65? I forget :-) ) it may soon become my favorite too!

Thanks, here's my old photo showing one next to a lid to a small yogurt cup for scale.

Glad you like them. What else do you get at TC Pastry?

Usually i go for their steamed items (e.g, siu mai, har gao, etc). I also like their shrimp and egg patty ( it's like a small egg fu yung without the bean sprouts) and mini chicken pie.

my 86-yr old mom's line dance class at the Golden Gate Senior Center at 6161 Fulton Street near 36th Ave. orders boxes of the baked char siu bao for their after-class snack from Lung Fung Bakery. It's known also for birthday cakes.
I also like the gai mei bao fresh and warm from the oven. The dan tats are flaky but not as eggy-rich as the legendary Golden Gate Bakery dan tats in Chinatown on Grant.
If you go early, before the faves run out for the day, you might try the red bean buns. This place has history; it never seems to change and the sweet counter lady remembers everyone.
