Sintra choices

Any good food in/near Sintra if one does not want to drive to Lisbon?

It's not a meal, but please eat a cheese pastry for me while in Sintra. I have dreams about those.

I have not been in a few years, but the Restaurant Alcobaca had a great vegetable soup that have been unable to reproduce (it did not haze chorico and I am not sure it was caldo verde or something else, it was this thick yummy soup

Also, there was a yummy pastry shop right near it on that little street going up from the main square area. I had delicious pastries de belem type custard pastries.

Also interested in Sintra. Will be going there as a day trip from Lisbon, so we're probably talking lunch, mostly. Always happy with fresh, inexpensive and informal. Any more suggestions?

One place that I have been going for years and had very good meals and service is O Restaurante Regional de Sintra. It is fairly close to the train station and away from the crowded/touristy parts of the town. I've never had a bad meal and the service is extremely friendly. I ate there as recently as February and two weeks ago!

Recently had a very nice meal at Tacho Real. A lovely fresh fava bean salad followed by a simple grilled fish with steamed vegetables (both were specials that evening). The house wine was quite drinkable too. Service was rather formal - linen tablecloths, candles, etc. and the price was very reasonable.
