TONIGHT! 2 foodies in NYC

I searched the board but couldn't find exactly what I wanted...

I lived in NYC for 7 years and moved away 3 years ago so I'm a little rusty on the best current spots. My boyfriend and I are in our early 30s, both of us foodies. We're coming into the city tonight for dinner (keep in mind, last minute reservation...). We LOVE good food, we are pretty adventuresome but of course also love classic, and appreciate an atmosphere where the wait staff know and enjoy the food as much as the customers. We are less interested in pomp and circumstance and atmosphere. Where do NYC chefs go to eat? Blue Ribbon comes to mind, for example, but I'm not sure...

We will be going to a comedy club on 23rd and 8th so can be near there but really doesn't matter...

I'm sorry - I really did try to search the board... :)
I hope this is enough info- let me know if you have questions. I'll be checking frequently!

      2. I would suggest one of our favorites, Allegretti, on 22nd, b/t 5th & 6th (closer to 6th). Delicious contemporary Proven├žal-style cuisine, very good wine list, excellent service, attractive atmospherics. A quick check of OpenTable shows availability for this evening.
