best seafood on San Juan Island?

will be in San Juan Island later this month and would like delicious seafood, not too formal, not too expensive. Any ideas?

I ate at Friday's just a day ago. Figured a place named "Crabhouse" would have good crab, and it was pretty good. Most of the menu is decent frozen breaded seafood, deep fried. But the crabs are (according to the waitstaff) fresh off the boat that morning. The are appearently cooked in the morning and chilled, served cold, for $20 for a whole crab. Served with some garlic toast and some butter-flavored grease. We had no expectations, so we were fine, but don't come looking for fine dining or a deep local seafood selection. Just crab and beer.

But a tip, after dinner we walked in to King's Market grocery just up the road, and in their seafood case they had chilled, whole, fresh dungee for somthing like $4 a lb. We didn't grab one, but wished we had thought of it before hand. Our hotel room had a little deck, and we could have easily eaten 2 crabs with a bottle of local wine alfresco for under $25 had we stopped by King's first.

We were on SJI for a week over the 4th of July holiday and ate at Downrigger's 4 times. Everything was really good. I had the Dungeness Crab Louie Salad the first day. What a treat!!!

      More Expensive -
      Coho
      Less Expensive -
      Downriggers
      Front Street Ale House
      Medium -
Backdoor kitchen usually has some fish on the menu. It is not a seafood house.

Is there a strictly seafood house on the island? Friday's Crabhouse? I am not recommending that (because I do not know it) - I have never been there.

Most places will have some form of fish on the menu. Salmon, crab, halibut predominate. It is halibut season right now. So there will be lots of that.

Repost if you intend on zipping over to Orcas.

We like Downrigger's, it's walking distance from the ferry. I've had dungeness crab at Friday's Crabhouse and it was decent. I've never had anything I didn't like at Downrigger's. It's casual, we go in in shorts and tee-shirts. If you think the inside is too fancy, you can sit outside on the deck to eat. It's a little pricey but we eat there at least half of the meals that we have on the island. If you can catch the ferry to Orcas, try Portofino Pizza in Westsound. It's really good.
