I love mushrooms and generally pan sear them at home. What are some of the best mushroom dishes in NY that will inspire and surprise me? Any type of cuisine is welcome!

I second the Craft hen of the woods. Maybe the single best mushroom dish I've ever had. There are mushrooms in the kimchi at Ssam Bar which are divine, but it's not specifically a mushroom dish.

They are the same at Hearth. Marco Canora created the dish at Craft, and brought it over to Hearth.

Good to know- I've never had the dish at Hearth but the next time I'm there I totally will. So freaking good. And Hearth has such a killer wine list.

Seconding the mushrooms at Hearth and note that if you ask, they will do a mushroom medley for you of different ones if you like.

Technically, though, even though they say "roasted" on the menu, Colicchio's cookbook states that they should be cooked in a pan on the stove, not in the oven.

I find the combination of mushrooms, butter, thyme, and tarragon to be irresistible, though.

Polenta and mushroom at Scarpetta is my number 1

Polenta, eggs and mushroom at Commerce for brunch is a close second though

Polenta with mushrooms at Scarpetta is really great but I find that the use of truffle masks the mushrooms a bit.

the nobu downtown has a mushroom salad with yuzu dressing which is amazing. its not cheap, but they have all different types and its worth getting if you are a mushroom fan, it was a whole new mushroom experience for me (being used to the home pan sear type myself)!

I love the mushroom lasagna in the front room at Gramercy Tavern. The rich mushroom flavor is incredible.

Thanks everyone! I think I'll have to make a trip to Commerce for brunch this weekend and try that Polenta, Eggs and Mushrooms. Mushroom Lasagna at Gramercy Tavern sounds like a slice of heaven... that'll be next!
