Screen Door is beautiful, but you chose great competitors. Screen Door is downtown at One Arts and is particularly cool area with other choices like Tei An and Dali Wine Bar to check out after (or before). Tel An rooftop is awesome.

hattie's - love the food, love the atmosphere, service is great. great example of the type of restaurant that dallas is really lacking in. refined but not stuffy. delicious but not pretentious. stylish but not showy.

tillmans - a great place for out of towners. its more of a production than hatties....love the blood orange ritas, all the apps are fantastic, love the trio of fries. love the desserts. the service is a bit of a show, yes they'll dance on the table for you. but (and again, rare in dallas)...the execution is usually just as good as the concept. you walk away not only thinking "that was fun and cute" but also feeling like you got a good value on a good food.

i defer to people who know more about screen door than me. but you can't go wrong with either hatties or tillman's. two of my favorites in town.

had a ridiculously good meal at hattie's last night. love me some tillman's, but if you are still considering hattie's made a pretty strong case last night.

Hattie's, with Tillman's a close second. Depends on what kind of "down home" you're in the mood for, really. Hattie's is more refined Southern, and Tillman's is more of a Texas carnivore kind of place. Since they are a few doors apart, you could be totally hedonistic and do apps & drinks at one and dinner at the other. I'm just sayin'...

I've been to all three, and I'd go to Tillman's based on personal experience, or Screen Door based on an impressive recent review.

I went not too long after it opened, and wasn't that impressed, but there's now a new regime that has gotten at least one stellar review. So based on that I'd be willing to give it another try.

PS Just wanted to mention ... if you go to Hattie's, the fried chicken is actually chicken fried chicken.

I agree, definitely Hatties! Tillman's is good, but service can be hot and cold. Enjoy.

Definitely Hatties. Get the Pecan Crusted Catfish or the Shrimp with Grits. Fried Green Tomato Appetizer is great, too!
