Gitane or Nopa?
My wife and I are visiting SF for the first time. We already have dinner reservations at Perbacco and 1550 Hyde. Does anyone have an opinion on which restaurant, Gitane or Nopa, we should try for the third night? Or is there another restaurant that we should not miss if we are looking for great food with a SF/California flair? Price does not matter. We are staying at the St. Regis and don't mind taking a cab to get there. Thanks.

Gitane's in the middle of a chef change. The founding chef is working with the newcomer and will be departing June 1. Have fans noted any changes recently?

La Folie is very different from Gitane or NOPA, far more expensive and fancy; the chef does make quite an effort to use local ingredients though; much more so than your typical french restaurant

Agreed. La Folie is both (1) awesome and (2) not in the same category. It is Provençal French utilizing local ingredients. Relaxed atmosphere. My favorite restaurant in the city, but expect to pay $75 - $100/person before drinks, tax and tip.

We really enjoy the food and cocktails at Gitane & love the space with its cozy yet sexy vibe. Can't vouch for the food at Nopa as we've only had drinks there, but space is very different in that it is open with a small upstairs loft (?) area.

It depends what you are looking for - NOPA is much more similar to 1550 Hyde than Gitane, so Gitane would give you variety; although I find the food to be slightly better at NOPA (some woudl argue that it's also less cutting edge/innovative at NOPA too).
Regardless of which one you go to, maek sure to order a cocktail.
