Murray Hill Restaurant Needed for Group Dinner

I have been asked to plan a group dinner for about 20/25 people in the Murray Hill area and I’m from Pennsylvania so I need some help. Our group will be staying at the Affinia Shelburne Hotel (303 Lexington Avenue) and my manager has requested a venue within close walking distance – 15 minutes at the most. I also need a venue that is a bit more upscale with private or semi-private dinning space and I need a menu with options for everyone (chicken, beef and seafood). I’m aware of the Rare Bar & Grill, but I wanted to gather some three or four options. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks so much!

  1. It would be helpful to know your per person budget for food only, keeping in mind that your will have to add the cost of drinks, nearly 9% tax, & 20% tip. With a group this size, the gratuity will no doubt be added automatically.

Btw, The Shelburne is located on the corner of Lex & 37th. A 15-minute walk can take you into several other neighborhoods: Gramercy Park, the Flatiron District, Chelsea, and Midtown.

Thanks so much for the help. I’m looking to spend, at most, $125.00 per person (all inclusive). I’m open to all options as long as they are within the specified walking distance.

    2. It's not necessarily in Murray Hill, but it's very close. Convivio is one of the best italian/pasta joints in town and they have an excellent $64 tasting menu. They have a private room downstairs too, pretty sure it'd fit your party. Check it out.

That should be SErge, not to be confused with Sarge's Deli. (It was formerly known as Cafe Crème.)

        2. I wonder whether I Trulli would work for you.

The last time we had dinner at I Trulli, the pasta was excellent, but the main courses were disappointing.

          2. Artisanal on 32nd has areas they can section off for groups.
            BLT Prime on 22nd
            Megu @ the UN Plaza
Sakagura - doesn't have a private room AFAIK but they'll probably cordon off a private section for you.

If you think you can walk to Madison Square Park (most able-bodied NYCers could do it in fifteen minutes) there's a couple of the big names: Tabla has a "semi-private" section, and Eleven Madison Park has a couple of private rooms.

A little further South, Craft and Craftbar both have gorgeous rooms, but that might be a little farther than some of your party want to walk.

We stayed at the Murray Hill Shelburne too. We walked to Trattoria Alba on E. 34th (very short walk from the hotel), and I highly recommend it. The night we dined there, there was a wedding shower dinner going on of about 20 women (near the front of the restaurant). I also noticed in the back there appeared to be a private garden style room of some sorts. The food was excellent and out of all the reviews I have read, (here, and on yelp and others) the food and service gets high marks. I think you could eat here for well under your budget per person.
We were the ONLY guests that night from out of town, it was all locals there and the place was pretty full on a Tuesday night. I can't stay enough about it....

The minimum cost for private dining at EMP is far higher than the stated budget.

I strongly disagree with the recommendation for Megu. It is an overpriced tourist trap and not right for this occasion.

Agreed that Megu is overpriced and a tourist trap - but that said, it would fit their needs & budget.

Didn't know what the minimum for EMP was for private dining. No info on that on the website. But yeah - $125 pp "all inclusive" would probably be difficult to do there for a normal dinner. That said, probably cross BLT Prime off the list, too. Were I planning it, I'd probably go with Artisanal or Tabla.

I once checked into doing a private event at EMP. Though I can't recall the exact minimum figure, it was well above $3125, which is what the o.p. wants to spend all-inclusive for 25 people.
