Cocktail Bar/Lounge in Newport Beach/Costa Mesa

honkman May 11, 2010 06:38 PM

We will be in Newport Beach/Costa Mesa for a brief weekend trip from San Diego and are looking for a nice cocktail bar/lounge in this area (or withing 15-20 minutes drive) which has (obviously) good cocktails but is also open late (at least until midnight) since we will have tasting menu before which most likely won't end until 22 pm but we would like to end the night with a nice cocktail. Any suggestions ?

… hidden in plain sight at The Camp … no name, no signage … cool vibe … good bites.

I know a sous-chef there, they recently revamped the menu and now they have a sign (more like a projected lit stencil on the side of the building at night). Haven't been since the menu change, but a good suggestion.

There's always Lola Gaspar in downtown Santa Ana Artist Village, it's about 20 minutes from Newport Beach. Open until 2 AM Mon-Sat nights.

Solid second for LG! Great spot, vibe and bites. IMHO, the food at LG tops Mesa's. Please note that LG does draw quite a crowd at times.

Lola Gaspar is in hipster central and is so far from Newport/Costa Mesa area.
If you want good, solid cocktails, you'll have to venture out to downtown Fullerton.

Anqi or Charlie Palmer at South Coast Plaza have great cocktails in their bar area.

Mesa is good but gets very crowded and noisy, at does Three Thirty Three in Newport. For my money, both are more about being seen than having a relaxing evening with friends. A Restaurant might be better, the lounge is more comfortable, but the one time I was there coincided with a fund raiser, and the place was jammed. The Cannery has a nice upstairs bar, so that might be a consideration as well. I also like Muldoon's. It is a bit more pub like, but it does have a full bar and the indoor patio is nice.
