Need Ideas for Private Party on a Friday night in Brooklyn

Hi - we're hosting a rehearsal dinner on a Friday night in October in Brooklyn and have been having a hard time finding a good, relatively reasonable and somewhat cute spot that is willing to host a party for 50 on a Friday. Anyone have any experience doing something like this? Any recommendations? We could go in a lot of different directions - even really good pizza or old-school comfort food could work, or something New-Brooklyny.

Any suggestions welcomed!!!!!

  1. I don't have any experience planning anything like that, but I saw the charming event space below the main floor of the restaurant Vinegar Hill House. Maybe that would work?

    1. Bar Toto in Park Slope. I went to a wedding there once and it was fun. Nothing fancy, but good food and easy people to deal with. Staff was great.

      1. Hi choco, I am in a similar situation and ran across your post - wondering if you would mind sharing where you ended up having your event? Thanks!

        1. A couple of recommendations based on private parties I've been to - Bubby's upstairs room although it might be a bit large for your party size. However, great views of the Brooklyn Bridge and lower Manhattan. Also, off most peoples' radar is Gallery Restaurant in Dumbo. They do a lovely job of setting up the space for an evening event; don't be fooled by the casual cafe vibe you'll find at breakfast or lunch. And perfect for your party size.

1 Main St, Brooklyn, NY 11201

          The Gallery
108 Jay St, Brooklyn, NY 11201

          1. bumping this thread since i find myself in a similar predicament. Chocho, where did you end up having the party?

As an add-on, does anyone have ideas of places that dont serve food but could be rented for a fee and would allow us to bring in food? bars with minimums would be fine/even ideal (although a place with a cash bar option and flat rate rental/service charge would work well too)

we're having the wedding there the next night, but good thought ;)

Local 61 in Carroll gardens seems like a potential choice but they serve food (though only really snack platters, which is our concern since we'd like something more like dinner, though not necessarily traditional)

Aha - I knew I heard that suggestion here recently, I guess it was from you :D

I've been looking for a venue for similar purpose (a come-when-you-like birthday gathering over a few hours, where we could have a private space) - I liked the idea of 61 Local a lot (and I live very close - FYI it's in Cobble, not Carroll), except - do they serve wine and liquor or just beer?

                  1. re: cazique

you know, its been a while since we've stopped in but i think they had wine and beer when we were there last, cant say about the liquor situation (and its not apparent from their website)

                    1. re: tex.s.toast

Seems like there are a lot of us in the same boat! Tex.s.toast: when I contacted Chestnut on Smith to see if they could accomodate us, they said they weren't taking bookings that far out (my date is June) because the building is up for sale, but recommended Invisible Dog. If you don't mind bringing in everything 2 nights back to back, maybe that would work for you?

                      1. re: starvomarvo

Tex, I want to second the Invisible Dog - our kids' school has held its parents event there the last two years and the space is very cool. It may be a bit raw depending on how much/little you want to do with it (and I didn't work on the event so I can't speak about price or how they are to work with) - but having an event there with your own bartender and food is clearly something they do there. Plus, similarly to 61 Local, right on top of the F and easy from any other subway. Worth a look.

                        1. re: cazique

i agree it looks quite cool but i think between rental fee itself (3k for the day) having to rent tables and chairs and bring in food this is outside of our range for what were looking for, will keep it in mind for future celebrations, and im glad you posted here as a future resource for others.

                  2. re: tex.s.toast

i went to a rehearsal dinner held at local 61 last summer, that really hot week in july-- and it was a total disaster. their upstairs private room was not AC'd as promised; the staff was extremely unaccommodating and without going into more details, suffice it to say that it was not a good experience on any level. the couple of honor hugely regretted their choice.
they did serve beer and wine and did allow the couple to bring in their own food, which made them think it would be a good (and affordable) option. turned out to be a mistake.
