Savannah, HiltonHead Island, Tybee, Beaufort,St Helena Island and Murrells Inlet
In June we're going on a Beach Roadtrip with 2 to 3 days in each of the above areas. Our dress of choice is shorts and flipflops, NO dressing up for dinner...I started looking for places online that Guy Fieri would feature. Beach shacks and Marsh shacks....nothing that even appears to have Michelin rating anywhere near it. My accessory of choice is a can of OFF.... Does anyone have any recommendations that may fit the bill. Seafood, Carolina BBQ, Breakfast...authentic low country hole-in-the-walls, no tourist traps.
You can wear shorts but these are not beach shacks. Just plain ole good food at Tybee. There are no beach shacks in Savannah but some nice bars with good food for folks in shorts.

Thanks so far! they dont have to be on the beach its just that we'll be mostly close to the water but also not...i.e. Savannah and we do plan on changing our shorts not the same ones all the time ;) I have also printed out some of the other threads for the area...and we usually always find a hole-in-the-wall somewhere all on our own (what did we do in the old days) so maybe I'll have some chowhound establishment to report on when I return.

You've gotta go to the Shrimp Shack on St. Helena Island for the shrimp burger, they only serve lunch & they don't take credit cards.

If you're at the Shrimp Shack you might as well stop in the Johnson Creek Tavern for a cold one. My food experiences there have widely varied.
We stopped in Boondock's (which you'll pass) two Sundays ago and didn't bother to stay for lunch, service was nonexistent.

My experiences at Johnson Creek Tavern have also been widely varied. But, the trend was definitely downward. The place is dirty and the service is horrible. It was so bad last visit, we vowed never to return.
I think Boondock's is a great place to eat. 35 cent shrimp (fried or boiled) on Wednesdays is an excellent deal. Never had a problem with service.

And for a different, but also very good shimp burger (they have a great Rachel too, and very good soups) go to Moon Doggies in Port Royal. Run by really nice people, all siblings. www.moondoggiescafe.net

You may want to add Bowen's to your list. You WILL need Off.

Sue, I should probably already know this, but refresh me: are oysters still in season? I'll be on Folly the last weekend of May. Is that a good time to go to Bowen's? OFF? really? My Mom and husband are both biting bug magnets...

Bonna Bella Yacht Club in Savannah would be a good choice, if you can find it. It's definitely off the beaten path. Really good food, and on the water.

Try Flying Fish on Wilmington Island on the way to Tybee. I have always liked it, and it seems to get consistently good reviews
