Best places to eat in Hamilton Heights/Harlem?

My boyfriend and I are moving to NYC, up in the West 140s. I love food and would be grateful for any suggestions people may have. I already know about Tanto Dulce cafe and look forward to having it nearby. Otherwise, we love great BBQ, Italian, Thai, Mexican...okay, who am I kidding? Pretty much anything. We'll be on a tight-ish budget but might be able to splurge sometimes.

Any thoughts?

  1. Welcome to NYC! I'm not familar with the W. 140s but can recommend some restaurants farther downtown.

Frederick Douglass Blvd. has become known as the "restaurant row" of Harlem in the past few years. These are some of the places I've been to and can recommend:

    Frizzante (Italian; 117th St.)
    Zoma (Ethiopian; 113th)
    Society Cafe (113th-114th)
    5 & Diamond (112th-113th)
67 Orange Street (Drinks & small plates; 113th)
    Melba (Southern; 114th)

There is also a nice market, Best Yet, on FDB and 119th, diagonally across from Frizzante.

    On Lenox Avenue, there are

    Lolita's (Mexican; 113th)
Amy Ruth's (Southern; 116th bet. Lenox and Adam Clayton Powell)
    Native (American; 118th)
    Tonnie's (Cupcakes; 123rd-124th)
    Chez Lucienne (French; 125th-126th)

116th bet. Lenox and ACP is also known for its African restaurants. Africa Kine is a popular one.

As for BBQ in Harlem, there can only be one: Dinosaur BBQ on 12th Ave. and 131st. Do not even think about going there for dinner without making reservations (or lunch on the weekends). While you're there, check out the great market, Fairway, in the vicinity.

    Enjoy!

    1. I live at 160th, so I can help you with some places uptown from you.

-El Presidente (Dominican) at Broadway and 165th. Go for the roasted half-chicken for $7, and the sweet plantains. Great chicken, comes with rice and beans. I get one dinner and a couple lunches out of it. (My family of 4 gets two half-chickens plus fried & sweet plantains and eats for under $20, with leftovers.)

-El Conde (Dominican Steak House) at Broadway and 175th. Share the basic skirt steak with onions--great flavor and plenty of food for two. Plantains are good too.

-Margot (Dominican) at Broadway and 159th. Masita Salteadas (pepper pork) is to die for.

-New Caporal at Broadway and 157th. Fried chicken. Try it with the hot sauce (packets).

-Reme (diner) at Broadway and 169th. Good, inexpensive breakfast. Decent omellettes, and the daily special is 2 eggs, potatoes, coffee, juice for $3.50 (add meat for a buck or so more). I've only been there for breakfast (usually once a week).

I agree about Dinosaur BBQ. They also have a fantastic beer selection. Don't be tempted by Dallas BBQ in WaHi: always busy and always awful. And Carrot Top at Broadway at 164th has decent carrot cake but in general is overrated.
