Delivery options in Tuckahoe/Crestwood/NE Yonkers?

More than two years after we moved to the area, we're still struggling to find food delivery options in the area -- and with a small child, having to pick up takeout is hard to manage.

For Chinese, we usually go with East Harbor in Yonkers. Have also tried the one in downtown Eastchester (?East Bamboo?). Still looking for better.

We have tried the pan-Asian place that replaced Calvin's in Bronxville - Lemon Tree? fair.

Ribs on the Run is tasty, but a little pricey. Same for the Indian place in downtown Tuckahoe.

Haven't found any pizza delivery we like, though I hear Crestwood pizza did change hands. Is it any better? In a pinch, we'll send someone out to Central Ave. for Pepe's pickup.

We get all sorts of paper menus, but not sure which to take a chance on.

Suggestions?

  1. I think East Bamboo is the best Chinese place around. Their delivery is usually very quick too. Most of the pizza places in that area are pretty bad. Since Chubby's closed the options are pretty small. Gino's and A'Mangiare in Bronxville are pretty good. Last time I was at Gino's I got a white slice which was excellent. Never had pizza from A'Mangiare, but the food is decent. Luigi's on Bronx River Road is pretty good, but not sure if they deliver to where you are. Same deal with Fleetwood Joe's (I don't love their pizza, but the food is very good).

I'm a big fan of Burrito Poblano in Tuckahoe, but I don't believe they deliver. I get takeout from there once a week. I also know The Quarry and Stephen's Green do takeout.

I agree about Gino's. The pizza is the best delivery in the area. Fleetwood Joe's pizza sometimes is great and other times you wonder if they had someone else make it because they were too busy.

I disagree about East Bamboo. We ate there once and did not like the food. The soup was inedible. My DH likes Hunan III in Bronxville for chinese takeout. Right now I don't have a favorite. used to like Ho Ho's but recent take out was drowned in soy sauce and I heard they have new owners so that explains it.

Funny you mentioned the soup. Whenever I get hot and sour soup I got to Golden Duck on Garth Road. To me, theirs is the best around. I have a hard time believing you didn't like the food, but liked Ho Ho's. That place has been terrible for the last four years. Not bad, but terrible to the point of throwing out without eating! Definitely not something new.

When I first moved up here 7 years ago we liked HoHos. Then it went bad and we stopped ordering from them. I was there about 6 months ago and thought it had improved but recent take out last month was inedible. So maybe I was just starving the other time. Great Wall has quick delivery but is greasy. Jade Garden I don't like.

I have only been to East Bamboo once because I was so turned off by the soup the whole experience is negative in my mind. i can't remember what else we had and if it was decent.

Actually the last really good chinese meal I had was in Queens.

The best I've had was actually the Pagoda on Central Ave (in the little strip mall where Casa Maya is). My father had the special fish dish which they pulled from the tank about 10 minutes before serving and I had a seafood dish myself. Everything was so fresh and wasn't covered in thick sweet sauces the way most takeout dishes are. To me it's always a good sign when you walk into a Chinese restaurant and 90% of the patrons are Chinese.

    2. A'Mangiare is good for pizza and other Italian take out like chicken parm, and their soups are homemade and really excellent. Chinese take out is hit or miss. Hunan has some decent items, notably their Szechuan dumplings are reliably good, but some of their other food can be greasy. It depends on the night and who's in the kitchen it would seem. I don't know if Haiku delivers but they certainly do take out and their food is generally good to excellent.

      1. Thanks for the rec on Hunan III, maybe we'll give them a try - think they're in the menu collection. I thought East Bamboo was OK but hubby gave it thumbs down. We've tried Haiku too, but it took forever to arrive and was kind of cold and unappetizing when it did. Perhaps we should give them another try.

I rarely do take out from Haiku, but they seem to do a thriving business in take out since I see so many bags leaving the restaurant. It is so quick to eat there, and it seems to be so family friendly with lots of kids, so perhaps a meal there might be in order!

        2. So here are some other paper menus in the collection - any thoughts?

          - Lotus King in Eastchester on Mill Road (Chinese/Japanese)
          - Yoshino Asian Fusion on Gramatan Ave in Fleetwood ("Grand opening!")
          - Angelina's in Tuckahoe
          - Foo Chow Chinese, Columbus Ave., Tuckahoe
          - Garden Sushi, Columbus Ave, Tuckahoe
          - Hi-Dragon Chinese on Pondfield Road, Bronxville
          - LaBella, Italian/pizza on Central Ave in Yonkers
          - Villaggio's on Main St. in Tuckahoe

          1. re: baysider

We like the sushi from Yoshino. Pad Thai is not bad. My husband also likes their sukiyaki (sp). and salmon teriyaki.

            1. re: baysider

True these are options, but Lotus King, Angelina's, and Villagio are all horrible.

              1. re: jhopp217

Ditto on Lotus King- they seem to have changed their cook a couple of years ago, and then they went from good to terrible literally overnight. Walk across the street to East Bamboo for better.

                1. re: JMF

I rescind that remark. I realized after I posted that it has been years since I went there. I went last night for takeout, and it was pretty good. Enough so that I will check them out again soon.

                  1. re: JMF

After a few visits I realized that they are only ok.

                2. re: baysider

We used to order from LaBella when we lived in Bronxville. The pizza and the food are decent. For pizza, give Happy Days a try. They are in the north end of Eastchester, but should deliver to you. The new Chinese place near the Scarsdale train, Rich Chinese Food is pretty good. Very fresh, but stingy with the protein in the dishes.

                3. I just started getting take out from Hunan III in Bronxville next to the A&P. They have remarkably improved and last night, of seven dishes we ordered, only one was mediocre, the rest were pretty good.

                  1. re: JMF

They are my husbands favorite takeout too. BTW I noticed yesterday that there is a new chinese coming to the former Calvins Chinese space across from Lawrence Hospital ER. Lemontree? did not last long.

                    1. re: rolise

I only went to Lemontree once, had one dish which was excellent, but so severely expensive that I put it out of mind.

                    2. re: JMF

                      We like their dumplings.

                      1. re: roxlet

Hunan III does decent szechuan dumplings with a very thin/delicate wrapper.

                        1. re: JMF

                          Those are the ones.

                    3. I intended to pick up a pie at Pepe's Sunday night but there was absolutely no parking and I didn't feel like waiting for a spot to open up. I remembered there was a newish pizzeria (Dellpirmo's) in the highridge shopping plaza next to the chinese takeout place. I had a very good slice of pizza "meatball with pomodoro sauce" I don't think this combination is on the menu I saw it in the case. I am not a fan of meatball pizza but when I spotted the big chunks of tomato, quarted onions and interesting looking chunks of meatball I had to try it and I'm so glad I did. I only had American Express with me and they don't accept that card so I went home and had it delivered so they definitely deliver to the locations stated in the title of this post. My husband ordered the meatlovers pie ond loved it. BTW the MB slice was huge so I shared.

I may have to give them a try again. I tried their plain slice and it was terrible. I tried several of their hero's and there were huge, but mediocre.

                        1. re: JMF

Thanks for the heads up regarding the other food. I guess we can disregard the fact that my husband liked his pizza because he does not really know from good food. I'm not sure why I even mentioned it. Perhaps I was excieted by the prospect of discovering decent delivery. I however stand by the slice I ordered. It was the single item in the case that appealed to me and I liked everything about it. I will add that the slice was the last of its kind in the case and was reheated.. Did you dislike everything about the slice? I liked the texture of the crust on my reheated slice.

                          1. re: chowdom

The slices were soggy and had the most grease I ever saw. pools of it ran off and onto my clothes. The sauce was tasteless. there's an old saying, pizza is like sex. Even bad pizza is good. Not true. i have had better frozen pizza, and I actually threw the slices away with one half eaten, and the other untouched. I have been meaning to give them another chance, rarely do I make up my mind on one try. But...

                            1. re: JMF

Wow that is nothing like my experience, My slice was greaseless the sauce was flavorful and the crust crisp. Hmm maybe my slice was an anomaly.

                      2. Having lived in Eastchester for just under a year now, I agree that it's hard to find places to order take out that are actually good. My favorite chinese take out is Jade Garden in Scarsdale. The prices are a little more than the average neighborhood place, but the quality of the ingredients and preparation is worth it. I'd definitely skip the David King that opened in Eastchester. I ordered sushi from here against my better judgement, and the delivery person couldn't find my address, thanks to the inept front desk person who took my order. The sushi was adequate. I'd make the trip to Azuma in Hartsdale or Nanase in White Plains instead of ordering take out sushi. For Italian, I like Roma's (the inside is dated but the food is good).

I hated David King in Eastchester when I first tried it months ago, but desperate for a place without a wait I tried it again last week and it was somewhat improved.

                          1. re: addictedtolunch

What did you have? I was very underwhelmed by their sushi and beef negimaki. It's unfortunate bc I absolutely love sushi and they're so close, so they'd be me go-to place if the sushi was good.

                            1. re: Cookingcutie

Sushi was still on the "meh" side but the various Cantonese items were a tick better than when they opened. And they were busier too, which is good because I get freaked out by empty restaurants and worry about how long the food has been around if there's no turnover. I'm not saying it's a destination, just that I'll be less eager to avoid the place.

                            2. re: addictedtolunch

You do know it's the exact same owner and cooks as Lotus King right? Rumor has it they didn't just change names, they were shut down by the health dept. Same people, you can expect the same. I've heard awful kitchen stories about that place and won't eat there. I like east Bamboo for takeout, but for sit down, and more authentic Chinese, go to Pagoda in Scarsdale on Central (near Maya). I'd also beware about getting sushi from places that dn't specialize in sushi no matter where you are.

                              1. re: jhopp217

Yeah, i rely on Azuma in Hartsdale for sushi and have given up on delivery, but for Chonese delivery, I use Jade Spoon in Scarsdale. I went to Pagoda once and found it authentic. Haven't been there in a few months. I used to order from East Bamboo as they are within walking distance from me, but I prefer Jade Spoon.
