Dinner at Causeway in Gloucester and What's going on with the Gull Rest. across street?

thanksgang May 10, 2010 05:21 AM

Went to the Causeway for a light dinner on Friday night - If you've been there, you know that is surely an oxymoron. My wife and I split an appetizer and a meal. Simple as it gets - mussels in a white wine broth and fried clams. Even though both were excellent, I got jealous looking at other meals. They had steamers as a nightly special. I usually make steamers at home because I grew up here and I don't understand the predilection of many restaurants to treat steamers as if they are a gourmet item. I'm tired of restaurant after restaurant proudly unveiling tiny bowls of 12 steamers and calling it a serving, but I digress. While we were eating our delicious mussels, I saw heaping bowls of steamers served to smarter diners at other tables. Next time.

Fried clams were delicious; lightly battered and perfectly cooked. If you can't get to the clam box, these were not a bad choice but I really like those big bellies at the clam box.
(on the clams, not the patrons!)

Does anyone know what is going on at the Gull restaurant across the street? Parking lot fenced off, an open sign on the door, and not a single car near the place. Closed? Renovations?

We started to go to the Causeway last weekend but parking was an issue so we tried the cinema lot next door. Well, didn't the owner/manager of the cinema come over and warn us off parking there and then proceeded to dis' the guy who owns the Causeway. We got an earful! He did however recommend Essex Seafood so we toddled up the road and had excellent fried clams and onion rings there. We'll be back. A nice alternative to the Clam Box.

I like Essex Seafood - generally a good job and its mostly locals who are in the know.

I've only been there once (last year) and it was the worst fried seafood experience I've had on the North Shore. Foul tasting oil, outrageously long wait. I'll never go back there, when Causeway, the Village or Farnham's are nearby.

That was our experience too. Simply horrible. It was like they served us the dregs they scraped up from the bottom of the fryer

2nd that SC, when we did a clam shack crawl and Essex was the worst, clams were the smallest I've ever seen, overcooked and dried out. I wonder if they ever change their oil. Yes, The Village, now there's a real sleeper.

I also like the Village b/c you can get a baked potato with your clams instead of those boring old Sysco fries everyone serves. Does anyone do clams and handcut fries? Now THAT would be a destination in my book!

Was at the Causeway last week, I saw the large bowls of steamers, and I mean large, coming out and wished I order one, they looked excellent. I think they were $11.

They do steamers right - absolutely!

A new hotel is going in on that site. The Gull is most likely gone forever.

I believe The Gull closes for the winter. I just called, and was told that the number has been temporarily disconnected. Anyone else know what might be going on there? Are they just closed for the winter and doing renovations? Their website is stil up, but that doesn't mean much.
