Walking toward Golden Gate Bakery from Jackson Street this morning and not seeing a line outside, I was concerned it might not be open. No fear, the shop was open and i was the ONLY customer at 8:45am. This is the first time that's ever happened!

With the luxury of time, I did ask what their vacation schedule might be this year. I was told that their regular vacation is a short closure in April, the last two weeks of July and all of August, and a short closure in November. They might take other time off in addition to that.

The lady said that I could always call ahead to check if the bakery is open. While they are too busy usually to talk on the phone and they don't take phone orders, she said they do answer the phone and can tell you that they're open.

I've gone by a couple times in the early morning to find them open without a line. I just assumed that the egg tarts weren't out yet. I guess I should have checked to see!

The counter lady told me that there's usually no line early in the morning. The egg tarts were ready to go, as well as most items typically in the case. The savory turnovers (e.g., gai "pie") were just coming out of the oven.

All of you guys have to understand. There is no pre-set schedule on when they go on vacation. They know they are so popular that they take vacations whenever they want! Sometimes they even go on vacation for 2-3 months straight!

FWIW Golden Gate Bakery is on "vacation" again. After their usual August vacation they opened to long lines during the runup to the mooncake festival, and are happily (or not) closed once again for an unspecified time.

Someone should teach them or someone close to them with inside info on the business operation schedule on how to tweet and facebook, so they can announce when they might be back or when they are closing. They probably have enough moolah in the bank to retire.

I like their old fashion approach to business. They don't expand their store, they don't update their store, they don't use calculator to sum up your purchase (just paper and pencil),...

Facebook or tweet is unnecessary for them. It is not like that is the bottleneck of their business revenue, consider there is always a 20+ minutes line in front of the store.

Have they reopened again? been trying on and off, including yesterday (10/31/10) with no luck. Still on vacation?

Strange thing was that I saw somebody in the store about 3 weeks ago, so I thought the re-opening would be coming up.

There frequently are staffers doing busy work inside GG Bakery during their (rumored-to-be enforced) "vacations."

Family members get their egg tart quick fix when GG bakery isn't open by way of Garden Bakery on 765 Jackson Street.

I just walked by GGB during lunch today. They are open and the egg custards are selling like, well, egg custards.

One of my friends has been keeping in touch with the restaurant because he knows how much I love their custard tarts. According to him, he chatted with someone who works there. She said the owner/master baker hasn't been coming in because he feels like he's getting old, doesn't want to work so much, and there's no one to take over. So she's just been going in to check on things, etc. My guess is that time the bakery is open will continue to be very erratic.

Also, the likelihood of them being on Twitter seems nil. My friend got the info he did because he was able to speak Cantonese with the clerk (unlike me).

I thought the egg tart master died a couple years back. Is this the person who took over?

The first baker did die and this maybe a replacement. My information was that the old baker was the youngest brother and the new baker maybe either someone not in the family or an older brother.

Oh lord they have been on vacation 4 out of 5 times I have tried to go there. They would greatly benefit from having a Twitter, but alas.

They have been on vacation literally every single time I've tried to go (like three separate occasions)! But I guess it's always been around this time of year.

Historically they've always taken a four week vacation just before the mooncake crunch for Mid-Autumn Festival, which usually falls in September. ln recent years, however, they been taking several vacations per year. Perhaps they make so much money from the long lines around holidays that they only need to open for the more lucrative periods.

I hate it when this happens. It always seems to be when I have visitors and they leave for a month at a time. Knowing they are on vacation makes me want an Egg Tart.
