Pho Saigon #1 on Jerome Avenue: Closed!

manilov May 8, 2010 07:57 PM

Finally made it to Jerome Avenue for Vietnamese this evening. Pho Saigon #1 at 2614 Jerome Ave is now a nail place! What a shame! Anyone know what happened?

(Ate at Com Tam Ninh Kieu instead. It was a mixed bag: summer rolls didn't taste so fresh, but seafood soup with hofun noodles was very good.)

Today I discovered, to my great sadness, the reason behind the relatively quick closing of Pho Saigon on Jerome Avenue. I was visiting the Vietnamese market across the street, the one right next to Cam Tam Ninh Kieu, and happened to mention to the lovely woman who runs it that I was sad that the Pho Saigon had closed so quickly. I had visited it in March and had had a really fine meal there; business seemed to be brisk when I was there as well.

The woman told me that the owner of the restaurant had suffered a heart attack and passed away at the restaurant around April 10th. I remember him quite well from my meal -- short, thin, very friendly and attentive and very energetic. His wife sold the space to a friend who converted to a nail place rather quickly.

Sad, short history of a place with real promise.

That's very sad. The owner was, as Anicca writes, very friendly, attentive, and energetic, and I was rooting for him to make a go of the restaurant.

thanks for the update; I had a couple of meals served by that guy; his food and energy will be missed.

Is the Vietnamese place across the street from Pho Saigon still open and how does it rate?

Yes, it's still open and is pretty good. I had the very fine bbq chicken (w lemongrass) over rice on Saturday and it was quite good.
