Dulce de Leche

Lemon Tart May 8, 2010 06:38 AM

I was interested in a recipe on epicurious that calls for "dulce de leche" without further explanation. Does anyone know if this means a sauce/syrup that one can buy? If so, does anybody know where to get it in downtown Toronto? I would think that the Latin American stores in Kensington might be a good bet. Would love to hear if you know anything about this. Thanks.

Dulce de leche is a Latin American "milk sauce". It became very popular last year, President Choice makes a dulce de leche product, so it is available at a well-stockk Loblaws.
Any Latin American store in Kensignton carries at least 5 different brands of dulce de leche.
You can also make your own from a boiling a can of sweetened condensed milk for 3 hours...you can find many methods/debates about doing this on the homecooking board.

Many thanks, cookiebaker! I'll pursue what sounds like an amazing chocolate pecan pie recipe!!!!

Indeed the Latin American stores in Kensington do carry Dulce de Leche. But there is an easier way of getting Dulce de Leche. Presidents Choice also makes Dulce de Leche, usually in the Jams/Spreads or Ice Cream topping section.

Also, I think the Dufferin Mall No Frills carries other brands of Dulce de Leche. However it has been awhile since I have been there.

I havent tried any of the brands in any latin American stores.. but I really dont think the PC brand compares to just a homemade version (which is super easy).

Mammoth, thanks! I bought the P's C version, but sometime I'll try the scratch method!

you can get a pretty good product of Dulce De leche from loblaws.
they also have a banana one that I have not tried.
it is like a carmel sauce and really really good
