MSP Cocktails

Chowhound coming in from New England next week. Looked through the posts and found plenty of options for wallowing in food (thanks for thehelp!); what I need now is a great cocktail place or two (or three). The type of place where adults drinks cocktails not swilling neon colored "drinks". What are the best cocktail places in the Twin Cities? Doesnt have to be fancy, but the bartender should know what he/she is doing.

    1. Strip Club - Danny is an outstanding bartender. And a great conversationalist. Sit at the bar and chat him up a bit, he can craft any tastes you might have a hankering for. As an aside, he was just voted Best Bartender by City Pages paper.

      1. As a former Bostonian (and fan of Green Street, Eastern Standard, B-side, etc) I have been on a bit of a search for good cocktails in the Twin Cities over the past few years since I moved to Minneapolis.

        My two favorite places are:

Strip Club Meat and Fish. I agree that Danny is awesome. There are homemade bitters, tonic, etc here.

La Belle Vie. They make some amazing flavor combinations (but do not worry - they are plenty strong).

A few other places with good drinks are:

Bradstreet Crafthouse (in the Graves 601 hotel). They take their drinks very seriously here. It is the sort of place where if they are not busy they will go into a long discussion of the differences between different types of orange bitters.

I'll second the Bradstreet recommendation. If I were to suggest a single place to someone, it would be Bradstreet.

Thirding Bradstreet Crafthouse (downtown Minneapolis). Sophisticated and gorgeous.

Also, if you can get a seat at the small bar at Meritage (downtown St. Paul), their drinks are also really nicely done. It's the kind of place where I'd feel guilty just getting cocktails if you were at a table.

I was pleased to see that my convention hotel was only two blocks away from Bradstreet. I managed to go there 3 times in a four-day trip. It was wonderful!

          2. La Belle Vie and Bradstreet, absolutely.

Bradstreet - though some of the drinks are neon colored. They even do an alcoholic amuse.

Saffron - If you weren't planning to make it for dinner anyway... $5 cocktails as part of one of the very best happy hours in town.

Cafe Maude - Especially fun if you want to catch some music on a Friday or Saturday night.

            2. Town Talk Diner - Way intimate, and everything is done with lots of care, such as their homebrewed ginger beer, housemade bitters, and bacon bourbon. With ex-band dudes behind the bar, its a good time.

Great drinks at Town Talk, yes. One small quibble about "intimate", for folks who haven't been there:
                .
I don't get that in the sense of "share some drinks and a close conversation with your date." I do get it in the sense of "get to know the people right next to you because, well, they're RIGHT next to you."

                Like a cheerful elevator car.
