Fun Dinner at Eclipse -- STL

nosh May 6, 2010 11:34 AM

During a trip to visit family in St. Louis last weekend we had dinner at Eclipse, the groundfloor restaurant at the Moonrise(?) Hotel on the east end of the Loop. My good impression began when I phoned for the reservation from L.A. and was offered an email confirmation, which I received almost immediately. We sat indoors near the windows, though there are some outdoor patio tables as well. Lots of fun decor with the astronautical theme, especially the lighting. We shared some pepper-fried calamari with a butter and jalapeno sauce -- nice and a bit unique. I thought my mixed greens salad was almost elegant. My 12-oz. strip steak was cooked exactly as requested, with a char but still medium-rare, and was a great value at $18 with gratin potatoes and thin green beans. We split three desserts among us five, but not a bit remained after the plates were passed -- a blondie topped with chocolate ice cream, nuts, chocolate, and whipped cream; a bread pudding with a cute saucer of lightly whipped cream; and a meringe with vanilla ice cream and some strawberries. Relatively new restaurant, all of our first visits, quite good. Valet parking available at the hotel entrance for $6.
