Bob Lobster - Newbury, Ma.

  • 7

Last Saturday, while visiting Boston, we went to Bob Lobster (Newbury, Ma.) for lunch. I had a serious need for fried clams and my son said he'd heard of this place, but that's about all he knew. We were already in the neighborhood. My opinion is based on just this one visit, but I was very impressed with the fried clams. The clams weren't big, but the were fresh tasting and tender. The breading was crisp with no greasiness at all; the oil must have been nice and clean. Loved their tartar sauce. I had ordered the clam roll, and it was plenty for lunch; I didn't bother with the bread. The cole slaw was nothing special. My clam chowder was served nice and hot and it was adequate. My daughter-in-law's corn and lobster chowder might have been a better choice. She thought it was very good. I noticed the nice pink and buttery "oil slick" on the top. I tasted one of my son's fried shrimp and they were superb!! Same light, crisp breading, and the shrimp were just so perfectly cooked that I don't know how they accomplished it in a fryer full of hot oil.

Inside they sell drinks from a cooler, and Richardson's ice cream for dessert. They sell fresh seafood, as well. You give your order inside and take a seat at one of the tables outside. The food is brought to your table when it's ready. There was hardly any wait between ordering and getting our food. (Wish I could remember if there's any indoor seating.) As the season progresses I can see parking being a problem and waits for food getting longer, but last Saturday it couldn't have been more perfect. The link below has the menu, driving directions, etc.

  1. Glad you enjoyed, it's a great place.

    1. We love it as well. Push comes to shove I will favor the Clambox as the I think the fries and onionrings are better there. But as far as the clams go they are just as good at Bob Lobster, there is never near as long a line, and the fact that you can get fresh seafood at the same place is fantastic. We also spend a lot of time on PI and it is very convenient.
      Go Bob Lobster !!

The Crew ate outside last year & my mix of fried clams & oysters was fab. We finished off the afternoon at Gram's in Newburyport with huge bowls of ice cream & all the trimmings: http://www.mygramsicecream.com/

Gee, I missed the oysters somehow! Glad to see these nice replies. I'm always a little skittish about posting on the basis of just one visit.

Gram's has a terrific hazelnut, with big whole nuts - but now there's gelato in Newburyport! Dolce Freddo across from the Firehouse is wonderful!

My friends do a Bob Lobster night each fall: they go later, on a slow night, bring wine, linen table cloths and real napkins - and we all have clams and lobster rolls! So much fun.

          2. Stopped there Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, short line when we got there about 4pm. DC ordered fried Haddock and I got the lobster roll. His fish was fresh, moist and just delish! The lobster roll on the other hand, I can't remember ever having a lobster salad roll with so little flavor. It was chunky, and had plenty of claw and knunkle meet but no flavor. I really couldn't say why, just disappointed.
