Hot Dog Rolls
I'm looking for hot dog rolls (buns) that are superior to supermarket rolls. I have a vague memory that Acme used to offer them. Could that be right?
I will appreciate suggestions, especially in the East Bay.
Thank you.

Milton makes sandwich rolls for hot dogs - we get them at Trader Joe's

Feel Good Bakery in Alameda is making hot dog and hamburger buns (although the burger buns are a bit on the small side). They were actually being sold in the butcher counter across the way -- I think they were a package of six for $5. I haven't tried them yet, but given the quality of the rest of their baked goods, they're probably pretty good.

I love the Alvarado St.sprouted wheat hot dog and hamburger rolls 'cause I don't eat hotdogs or hamburgers and they are delicious while holding up to alternative fillings.I am intrigued by Mama's Bakery split top buns...sounds like the perfect bun to grill in butter for a lobster roll or for others a grilled Hebrew National(Nedick's and Nathan's style).

It isn't in the East Bay, but Mama's Bakery in Los Gatos sells excellent old fashioned hot dog rolls (top split buns). You need to order them the night before or morning of. Their phone number is (408) 395-5254

Safeway sells Colombo's excellent hot dog buns -- they are more like a thinner sourdough sandwich roll than a traditional bun, but they hold up very well to a large juicy natural casing hot dog and taste very good. They shelve them with the other Colombo rolls rather than with the other hot dog buns. The package has a blue and yellow label.

I love Acme's. I've seen them only at the bakeries. I'm not sure what their schedule is, probably best to order ahead.
Totally nontraditional, but I also like Alvarado St. sprouted wheat buns. They're really nice toasted and the sprouted grains give a more interesting texture.

Not certain if your "supermarket rolls" include some of the less standard options available at many Bay Area supermarkets. Are you looking for an artisan product, or do you simply want a traditional bun with more body than the standard Rainbo or supermarket house brand options? If you just want the latter, you might consider the Milton's buns available at Trader Joe's, which are denser and moister than the run of the mill. I go back and forth on the Cake Box buns available at Piedmont Grocery and a few other local markets. You might also consider upgrading to the hoagie rolls available in 12 packs for under $2.50 at Costco. I use them when I'm feeding large groups and using sausages or larger hot dogs.

Acme has them, I believe in the afternoon, at the Berkeley store. I didn't like it but not sure I remember why. Possibly too firm, crumbly whatever I know I won't buy them again. I prefer Semifreddi dutch crunch. They are a little big but that allows for more onions and sauerkraut.
