Help in Orange County

f
fat kitty May 5, 2010 12:49 PM

On Sunday we are traipsing down to Orange County to celebrate 3 family birthdays with my dad. The only time of day we can all get together is brunch / lunch. Unfortunately, it happens to be Mother's Day, too, so that probably makes brunch more complicated....

Looking for something delicious in the Newport / Irvine / Costa Mesa area. Can be casual to "nice". Hopefully someplace where we'll be able to get a reservation for 6 or 7 people. We are open to various types of food, from traditional "American" to Japanese or dim sum or French, or.....? (Probably not Mexican since we all eat that all the time.) Also, some place with a wide menu selection would be great as we all have different eating habits and health issues, but prefer no chains.

Tall order? Any help is greatly appreciated. I'm afraid for what happens if we leave the selection up to others in the group.

    Greetings fat kitty!

Tall order indeed on Mother’s Day, especially for a group of 6-7. However, I do believe that Pinot Provence, one of Joachim Splicahl’s showcase restaurants, can handle your request in the early afternoon they close at 3pm). They offer an eclectic, set menu (see web site below) with choices for appetizers, entrees and desserts for $48 for adults and $15 for children under 12. On a normal, non-rush day, the food is outstanding. It has been excellent on Thanksgiving as well in the past. In fact, I’ve never been disappointed in over 100 visits, mostly for lunch.

It’s located in the Westin South Coast Plaza Hotel and valet parking is a breeze.

If you choose, please reserve ASAP.

Charlie Palmer @ Bloomingdale's is a gorgeous location, though their Mother's Day menu is a bit pricey @ $65/person. Food & service are what you'd expect at this level.

I'd 2nd Break of Dawn; it's currently a CH favourite. Very creative, very delicious b'fast foods.

Old Vine Cafe @ the Camp is also very good. Though I haven't been for b'fast, I loved everything I've had for their dinners.

Breakfast at Old Vine Cafe is great, especially their creamy cheese grits. But it would be tough to get a reservation for 6-7 on mom's day there

You cut a pretty wide swath there. A little out of the stated area (Laguna Beach) is Las Brisas (OK, it bills itself as Mexican but it isn't just that), which has a nice brunch menu, a pretty view, and takes reservations, but you may not be able to get one at this late date. You might try Roy's in Fashion Island. It is a chain, but a nice one, and they have a nice breadth to the menu, with a 3 course menu for Mother's Day. Fun would be Shin Sen Gumi for yakatori (the yakatori & ramen places are right next to each other) in Fountain Valley, but they don't take reservations and I don't know if they are open for Mother's Day lunch. There are some good Vietnamese options, Brodard Chateau comes to mind, but it is a little northwest of Costa Mesa. Likewise Thai Nakorn in Garden Grove is very good and good for groups with plates to share.

Break of Dawn in Laguna Hills a little south of Irvine is very popular here (and really good), but I don't know if they are taking reservations. My favorite Chinese in the area is Sam Woo Seafood in Irvine, but I don't think they take reservations either and I am underwhelmed by the dim sum, I prefer items off the menu.

Shin Sen Gumi in Fountain Valley only serves ramen for lunch; yakitori is only available during dinner hours.
Maybe you could try Lucca Cafe in Irvine for italian/med dishes
