Best Veggie Burger in Boston

I am in search of the best veggie burger in boston. I don't like my veggie burger to consist of rice and cheese in a patty. I am looking for something with beans and/or veggies...and something that tastes homemade. Good bun is always a plus.

  1. For me, there is no contest. The veggie burger at the Druid in Inman Square (Cambridge) is good enough that I often order it instead of their beef burger, which I think is the best hamburger in the city. It definitely contains zucchini and fennel, and some sort of grain (barley?). It is made in-house.

I really like the butter bean/lentil burger at Common Ground. The veggie burger at the Publick House is pretty good too. It is made in-house and definitely has some fresh veggies in it.

Audubon. I say this with confidence!

Second the vote for Audubon! I'm not sure I can say with any confidence that it's the best, but it's definitely a reliable standard (for some reason it's much better than its cousin at Miracle of Science, I find- not sure why...)

I love Audubon's two-bean burger, too. They have a great hamburger as well, but I regularly get the veggie one, too.

      2. It's a chain, shoot me, but Houston's by far!!!!

I've also heard the homemade veggie burger at Sweetwater is good.

I reluctantly agree that Houston's is the best I've tasted - with the homemade standard one at Christopher's a close second - and now a few other recs to try as well!

        2. My favorites in the city are the veggie burger at Christopher's in Porter Square and especially the one at the Burren in Davis Square. Both made in-house. The one at the Burren is very unique, made of veggies (I spot peas and carrots in there) and tastes of curry.

          1. I really like the veggie burger at the Independent in Union Square, Somerville. They make it from scratch and always hits the spot. I get it with a garlic aioli and it is very good. (also a good idea, switch out the fries for the sauted brussel sprouts.)

            1. Highland Kitchen makes a fantastic black bean burger. Here are some other options: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/6229...

              1. Lord Hobo in Cambridge makes a very good one, so now I have a backup in case cows go extinct.

While I love love love chick peas, I found the texture of the veggie burger at Lord Hobo to be off putting. For me, it was a bit too much like fried hummus on a bun.

                2. I like the homemade version at Atwood's Tavern. Bun and fries are both stellar. Great beer and wine to boot. Who needs beef?! :D

This is a subject dear to my heart. I have tried many veggie burgers in Boston.

My top 5 are as follows:

                    1. Houstons--It is weird that this place has the best one, but it does. It is worth the $13 for it too. It has beets in it and a delicious glaze.

                    2. The Druid--This burger is large, creamy and delicious. I saw a recipe for it once and it has butter and fresh veggies in it. A great choice. The only downside is they charge for replacing fries with salad.

                    3. Rivergods- This is my former number one veggie burger. The size of the burger got smaller and the price got larger. It is like eating one McDonalds hamburger. Too bad because it is delicious.

                    4. The Burren--Homemade and deep fried. What is not to love?

                    5. Precinct--Homemade veggie burger with nice flavor and texture, good beer and outdoor seating. This makes it my new summertime hangout.

I really dislike dry veggie burgers (VB). I find Atwoods, Highland Kitchen, Publick House and Christopher's VBs to be too dry and not as flavorful. I also hated the Independents burger a few months ago.

I have heard that Lord Hobo's VB was underwhelming and weird (from vegetarians-- tasted like fried hummus).

I need to try the Audubon's VB. I have no excuse since I work right near it.

                        Great mouths think alike!

                    2. The version at Trina's Starlite Lounge should also be in the discussion.

I forgot Trina's! It was very bland.

                        1. re: David_A

That's too bad. I wonder if they changed the recipe, since my girlfriend is a vegetarian and she rated Trina's up there with the Druid's. Though neither of us particularly like the bar itself, she is also a fan of the veggie burger at the Asgard.

                          1. re: Canadian Tuxedo

I tried it when they first opened. Maybe it has improved since then.

                      2. I have enjoyed Atwood's veggie burger every time we've ordered it.
