Bier Market on King W

We're thinking of going to Bier Market on King W for either lunch or dinner. The menu on their website looks okay. Is the food any good?

Not really. Sorry! It's a loud meat market with overpriced, not very good food. Mind you, it's not awful, throw-it-at-the-chef food, but you're not going to walk away from your meal thinking "yum, I can't wait to come back!"

Hmm... just noticed your title. Bier Markt is on the Esplanade, not King. Are you thinking of Beer Bistro? Beer Bistro is actually King East. But if that's the case, then yes, the food is very good. :)

There's a Bier Markt at King and Portland also.

Doh, really?! Sorry, I didn't realize that they opened another location. Is it just as mediocre and meat market-y as the original?

no dance floor, so less of a meat market but just as mediocre. you can get in a peek tonight. i think the saving grace of the whole place is the large patio which doesn't get as loud as one would think.

Nope, just looked at the website again. Bier Markt also has a restaurant on King W. I think I'll cross it off my list after reading TorontoJo's reply. Thanks....

I live across the street from the bier markt on King and go about once a week. The manager there is fantastic, I'm always impressed - seeing him on the floor, speaking to guests, running food, etc. They have live music most nights of the week (it really only gets pretty crammed on thurs./friday) - it's a completely different scene from the bier markt on esplanade - not meat markety at all in my opinion - and if you get the feeling that it is - just chill on the patio at night where everyone is laid back enjoying one of their many beers on tap. The bar staff is knowledgeable and very competent. In terms of food: their fries are awesome! the burger is good, and the mussels are hit and miss. My boyfriend had the steak frites once and really enjoyed. I've had the salad with different options (chicken once and salmon once) and they were both ok.. No, the food won't blow you away, but it's certainly tasty enough and I've always enjoyed any evening/afternoon/brunch I've had there. -(esp. on sunday nights when it's quiet yet busy enough and they have a great guitarist on the stage)

            Hope that helps!

Owned by the same company as East Side Mario's and Casey's. With the quality to match. Pass.

Ok. I wouldn't say quite that bad, but triple the cost though, so................

At least they have a good beer selection and Delirium Tremens , a fantastically delicious Belgian Beer. I wouldn't go out of my way for this place, but if your in the neighborhood its alright. Like joellita, I noticed that the manager is very attentive and seems to care.

The manager might be okay, but the staff is worse than indifferent. Case in point: the manager graciously comps an item, and then the staff adds it to the bill anyway, and does not seem sorry that it reappeared.

I agree that the food is terrible. If you are looking for the decent beer selection, you might as well head to Le Select Bistro which is nearby.

It's in the old Rotterdam brewpub space and is really only worth visiting for the beer selection -- the mussels I had there recently were decent, but the noise level on a Friday or Saturday night is intolerable.

I was there for a birthday party on a Saturday night. The place was absolutely jam-packed with people and I would definitely describe the standing room only bar crowd as a meat market. There was a live band which was fun, but so loud that conversation amongst the birthday party guests was impossible. The food was pre-ordered for our party of 20-25 and was not great. It was visually appealing/well-presented but really ho-hum in terms of quality. Service, however, was quite good, especially considering the sheer number of people in the place. I'd go after work for a drink or two, but move on when ready for dinner.

I have a question. Did you go to the one on King W or the other one? I am wondering coz I am planning on doing my bday on a sat on king w (away from G20 zone).
Please let me know. Thanks sooo much! I really want similar style/crowd/atmosphere as Bier mkt on esplanade but I can't risk having my friends heading into the G20 zones...

The food at both Bier Markts is equally poor and overpriced but they are both very lively on weekend nights. I would recommend going somewhere else for dinner and then moving to Bier Markt later on.

I've been to both, but more recently, the newer one on King W. As I stated in my post above, it was really too loud for conversation with friends. The music was decent and there were plenty of attractive singles, if you're into the meat market scene. If you're looking to have a fun evening with friends and would like good food and great conversation, I'd advise against the Bier Markt. I've never been impressed by the food at either location.

If I were you, I'd stay far away from the G20 nonsense and find a fun place on Harbord or College or perhaps Queen East, in Leslieville for your B-day celebration.

Drink a few beers first and the food will taste perfectly fine.

I alway say, check it out for yourself. I live in the area and my friends and I love the patio. The service (for us) is great, but we've gotten to know a lot of the staff there. Food and bier is always solid...I am surprised about how negative people are about the food. Anyhow, as for their managers joellita, I would have to agree....... I wonder which one you're talking about? I should let them know through all this mudslinging, that at least THEY'RE getting props!

Goodbye summer, see you on that red Portland patio in 2011!!

The food here is good. My friend and I downed 2 orders of the fries in half an hour yesterday... and this is a place I've had lunch, a snack and dinner, all in one sitting. (We were there for 11 hours). But yes, it's overpriced bc you're paying for (a) an incredible patio (b) the see-and-be-seen factor.

Astonishingly, the beer selection is not nearly as good as it should be, considering the name of the place. They didn't have porters!!! Come on! Also, they organize the menu by country of origin rather than by type (lager, stout, etc). But what totally ruined this place for me? Adding the number of calories per pint on the menu. Geez Louise... talk about sucking the joy right out of life...

All that being said, I think it's worth trying the food if it's not beer you're after. I've never been really disappointed.

My friend had one of the Oktoberfest specials which was okay but nothing special. The sausages were probably not made in house and the ham was just bleh - looked dry and unappetizing. I had the mussels here were just terrible. They weren't fresh, and some of the open ones looked as if they been cracked open because they stunk. Did I mention that it also wasn't a very good value?

The whole place was pricey and looked, overall, like it was trying to damn hard. I would not visit again.
