thinking of going to the cafe this weekend, but saw that they're undergoing renovations - is this impacting them at all?

you can still order off the regular menu at the bar a la carte, right?

I've been craving their fry plate - it's been years since i've gone!

Nothing has changed at Palena. You can still order off the regular menu at the bar and fry plate is as amazing as ever.

The majority of the construction will be in the old Magruders so it shouldn't impact the restaurant until the end.

check out their web site...expanding and opening a market. Which would be AWESOME.

Oh my god, they finally got rid of that horrible outdated site that looked like it had been designed in 1997! Awesome!

One of the things that the expansion will allow for is a bigger/better kitchen as I understand it. I'm really curious to see what the 'market' will entail....

if they are now going to be part of the shopping center, that might also mean they'll validate parking which is always good (can't always metro with older relatives and it's cheaper to park with a group than metro with one!)

The last time I was at Palena's Ann Amernick was still there. So an important question must be asked, did her departure impact the amazing desserts coming out of the kitchen?

Nope--or at least not for the amazing Goat's Milk Cheesecake. I had that sucker back in May, and it was as delicious as ever.

Went yesterday and sat outside for lunch (brunch service). Had the asparagus vichyssoise which had some good spice and a good, almost sweet asparagus flavor. Very well done but spring soups/consomme in the past have been much better. Of course, I had the gnocchi. It had guanciale and fava beans with fonduta. There was the mystery green gnocchi (ferns?) as well. Again, the best gnocchi in town IMO. DC had whole wheat and rhubarb pancakes. Excellently cooked and a great flavor, if a bit unique. Unfortunately, the donuts were sold out by the time we arrived (about 2)

actually I think the meat was actually pancetta. I am starting to think the green gnocchi were nettle

I've been a couple times recently. Once for dinner in the cafe, once for brunch. Dinner was better than brunch, but both were good. Definitely worth going back.
